As I'm planning on having a place for about 4 months in Madrid, I realize it will most likely not provide simple kitchen wear which I'll need for basic cooking, like pots, skillets, strainers, utensils, etc.

Can anyone suggest some stores to go to other than el Corte Ingls where I won't pay out the ass for a spatula and other such items?

While I'm on the subject, what about good grocery stores? Any chain markets or special place to go that has most of my needs in one spot, like produce, meat and cheeses?

Hey Rocinante buddy, I have one word for you... IKEA (www.ikea.es) Big Grin

Cheap, good enough and 3 HUGE stores here in Madrid! I go to the one in San Sebastin de los Reyes just outside of Madrid(here!) to get that kitchen stuff Big Grin

The superstore is just off exit 19 or the NI (Nacional I) highway.

You can get bus #156 from the Plaza Castilla to get there and back if you do not have a car or know someone who can take you.

As for the supermarkets here, I think that "Autoservicio Da" is the best for ones money...

... and they are everywhere in Spain.

There is also "Champion" supermarket which is more expensive but also a bit better quality...

I get most of my general food items at "Da" but it (as well as Champion) is very expensive for fruit and other produce and meats, fish, etc... I enjoy the food shopping and get my meats, fruits & veggies and such at the old fashioned markets near my house (MERCADO DE SAN MIGUEL & MERCADO DE LA CEBADA). I like to go to the fruit & veggie stand, the chicken stand and the meat cheeses stand all seperately. I do not like the one stop mega supermarket chains liks "Alcampo" or "Caprabo" etc... (I did not like it in the U.S.A. either).

You can de one stop shopping at "Da" and "Champion" if you like since they have everything but it is not my personal style.

The best thing to do is to scout out the local markets in your neighborhood and decide what is there.

Saludos,
jer...
