Because I am going to drag you all through the mud of every detail of my setting up piso in Madrid nah nah I now want to know about mattress sizes.

I am looking for something roughly equivalent to a U.S. queen (60 inches by 80 inches/150cm by 205 cm). Ikea sells mattresses that are 140cm by 200cm and 160cm by 200cm. El Corte Ingles and places I looked in the Rastro had as their largest sizes 150 cm by 190cm. Is there a standard here? I don't want to buy a mattress and then not be able to get sheets that fit right.

Also-where would you go for a mattress? Don't need to invest in a whole major bed at this point. I know Ikea, but their couches suck-don't know if their mattresses too... smiler

hey Wendy.

we have an ikea mattress and it is fine (has been for 5 years).

also, some of the couches at ikea are ok, they have a lot so you can't really say they all suck.

saludos,

oh, we bought the bedframe at ikea too. a basic wood cheapy, think it cost like 10,000 pesetas (60 euros) 5 years ago.

as for bed sizes and sheets, you can get sheets for any size but may have to get sheets at ikea if you get your bed there.

Are there options for home stuff besides ikea and el corte ingles?

There's La Oca--Puerta de Toledo. And Habitat--Nuevos Ministerios and Serrano. Both are pricier than Ikea, but probably less expensive than El Corte Ingles. There's a futon store with nice bed frames near Plaza Santa Ana called Futonia.

There's a little store that sells mattresses in the row of shops at Mercado de la Cebada.

futonia is on calle ecegaray, see http://www.futonia.com/tiendas.php .
also pricey but some nice stuff.

there is a store called "casa" on calle san bernardo (#1?) just off plaza de santo domingo (you can see it if you are on the corner of plaza santo domingo and calle san bernardo.

they have home decorations and smaller stuff but no big furniture like beds.

There is another Casa store I think on calle Quintana, near Argüelles, I bought some bookshelves there several years ago that were a bit more expensive than what I saw at Ikea but much nicer, in my opinion. I bought my bed at a store on Paseo de Extremadura, about a block up from the bridge, right side of the street, have had it about four years and it's great so far. I think some of the smaller neighborhood shops are getting better at offering guarantees that are similar to those offere by El Corte, and they also have better prices so they are becoming a good option.

ok, there is also a store called "el palacio de las camas" in the plaza del angel (corner of calle espoz y mina).

ena and i have always laughed about how expensive it is but it is central so you may want to have a look.

Ok, finally did a search in the paginas amarillas online for "flex", a mattress brand recommended by my hostal owner, Jose, who despite my wifi issues, is a really great guy. Found a bunch of actual mattress stores in Madrid and ended up buying from a chain called Noctalia. They specialize in Flex and have a couple of stores over in Salamanca. Not cheap-but better prices than El Corte Ingles and quality mattresses. big grin
