Hi Nuria, I didnt know the cinebank was cheaper, I might have a look then does that count for new films too?

I live in the calle Alcntara, (the block closest to Juan bravo, on the side of the volkswagen garage that just opened.

And Mariposita, I think you mean El Cantrabrico, ive been there, it is a great place. I didnt know my barrio was that popular with you multimadrileos...

hilko--
I think your barrio is very popular with mm-ers, because you live right around the corner from the comisaria that everyone non-Spanish must go to on a regular basis to get residencia, visas and other bureaucratic stuff processed and renewed.

I was really happy to find El Cantabrico. I think I've finally got the hang of eating percebes.

Do you have any other lunch recommendations around there? I know we'll be back a lot...

Sorry mariposita, not many lunch recommendations. I dont work around there so I dont go for lunch in my area much. However, in the evenings there are several nice places around. So here we go off topic (sorry jer):

1.
-La casa de cerveza or Bierhaus, corner of juan bravo/alcantara. (great beers and excellent **customer orientated***!! staff) dont eat anything there though, as it is a bit so-so.

2.
Taverna de padilla, corner of alcantara/padilla opposite the animal shop. (go for the food and the pincho with the drink, then order the Huevos de padilla). The little waiter is a real asset to the bar and the bartenders wife is in the kitchen preparing home made food. (try also the setas a la plancha.

3.
Good for learning spanish; every friday and saturday; la flauta magica (cuenta cuentos), on-stage storytellers, fantastic, no entrance fee but drinks a bit more expensive.

if you want to find a good video club with a great selection besides Septimo Arte (which is relatively expensive), check out either Diurno, an excellent video club/cafe with a great selection of new and old DVDs and at a much better price overall- it's in Chueca on the corner of C/San Marcos and Libertad. also, there's another one that i haven't been to in awhile & foget the name, but it's also got a great selection... it's on C/Caos de Peral, near Metro Opera. and one more, called Big Orange, also with a good selection and cheaper than Septimo Arte, on C/Pelayo near Alonso Martinez

hey gang, found and joined a pretty decent vid. club (dvd) today.

it is the one that mamarracho mentioned briiefly above but could not recall the name of.

it is called "LA DEVEDETECA" and they have a mix of commercial, alternative and classic movies.

more alternative film and classics than mainstream but they have a decent selection overall.

they also have a pretty big section of spanish cinema.

here it is...

la devedeteca
c/. caos de peral, 5 (right off the plaza de isabel II).
tel.: 91 547 1134
metro: opera.

MAP HERE or on their website at www.ladevedeteca.com

open:
mon.-fri. 12:00 noon to 10:00pm.
sat. & sun. 12:00 noon to 11pm.

they have a drop-box fo returning the flicks when they are closed.

prices are...

1 movie = 3
bono 10 movies = 25 euros
bono 20 movies = 45 euros

I TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE SUMMER SPECIAL IN AUGUST AND GOT A 20 MOVIE BONO TODAY FOR JUST 30 EUROS. COMES TO 1.50 EUROS PER RENTAL AND THE TICKET IS GOOD FOR 1 YEAR Cool PRICE OF THIS BONO GOES BACK UP TO 45 EUROS ON SEPT. 1ST SO GET YOURS NOW.

you also get to keep the movies longer if you use a bono. i was told today that i have to return the movie i rented on monday before they close (10:00pm). cool!!! Cool 1.50 euros and i keep it for the whole weekend.

mariposita, you should scope it out, it is not far from your place.

i did not notice if they had a kiddies section or not, forgot to look.

saludos,
jer...

Cool jer (note enlightened usage of trademarked lowercase)--

I'll definitely check out la devedeteca and take advantage of that deal. I've already pretty much exhausted all of the decent Spanish offerings at Roldan...

Speaking of DVDs, does anyone know where I can find some of the older Almodovar movies on DVD (like Matador, Ley del Deseo, etc?)? Strangely, it seemed that there was more stuff available in the US than there is here...

La Devedeteca is just what I was looking for. Thanks jer!

They only have DVDs and pretty much everything they have is good. They have a particularly good foreign section with lots of French film and good American stuff. They have all those cool box sets that you see at FNAC, but couldn't possibly afford to buy yourself. Should keep us going for quite a while.

hey mariposita, glad it worked out for ya.

yeah, i saw those box sets...

"24" (tv series, first 2 seasons).
"pink panther" box set.
"lord of the rings trilogy".
etc...

that is a great idea they have to rent them out since, as you said, they are like 60 Euros + to buy at most stores.

i asked about their policy on the box sets and they guy said they rent out on a per dvd basis.

for example, if a hitchcock box set has 6 movies on 3 dvds in it, you pay per dvd you rent.

also, if you rent a trilogy, they count it as 2 dvd rentals, not 3 Cool

saludos,
jer...

i have a question and hope someone here can help me, i'm really desperate! i'm looking for the spanish dvd boxset of "twin peaks", but i'd like to buy it and not rent it - which wouldn't make so much sense, because i live in germany Smiler

it is sold on ebay very often, but mostly for horrible prices.... it's only released in spain and nowhere else in europe (with ALL episodes). does anyone know a store (or internet store) that could have this for sale??? i tried fnac, but they don't have it.

thanks!

Hi, i just checked for you, it seems to be out of stock everywhere.
They used to have it on dvdgo.es
In Fnac just as you said: nothing.
El Corte Ingles, nothing.
I found it on Amazon.com, but im not quite sure if it would work with your dvd system, in any case, here you have the link . Smiler

Well, most probably, when a dvd disappears like this one did, its just to remaster it or add some new extras and start to sell it again a bit more expensive a couple of months later. They do it with many films.

I whish i could help you more, but im out of ideas. If they used to sell it, they surely will do so again. dvdgo.com is a good source via internet. So... take it easy Cool

greetings
Flora

Hi Flora,

thanks for the quick reply!!!

I checked the link to amazon, but that's not the version i'm looking for unfortunately. it's only the first season (episodes 1-9 or so).

i don't think they will sell it again soon, because in all other countries the second season is not released on dvd at all, although i don't know why.

thanks anyway,

kitty

Have you discovered the illicit (and illegal) world of torrents and internet downloading? In many cases, it is the only way that you can see certain foreign or vintage TV programs or movies.

One (not a law-abiding citizen like myself, of course) can find almost anything this way. And apparently Spain is the country that does the most of it.

I won't say too much else here, because I don't want to condone such reckless behavior or get jer into any trouble. Feel free to PM me, though.
