You have to get a DVD player that reads all zones. I got one here in the states ,for 159 dollars. THEN you have to make sure that the TV you have reads all formats. Europe reads PAL, the US Zone 1 is NTSC. If you live in Madrid, ask the guys who work on Calle Barquillo in the audio/high fi shops.

On a PC, I've found tha Window's Media Player (version 9.0) does a great job playing DVD's from all zones. You simply have to install a DVD codec - which can be downloaded for free.
Jer is right - you can absolutely play divx files through windows media player by downloading a divx codec. In fact, I use WMP to play pretty much all of my digital media. Here's a good LINK that describes the different file types WMP can support.
But I was referring to playing DVD's from different regions using the Windows Media Player. Windows XP needs to have a codec installed before Windows Media Player will play DVDs. You may need to install a DVD player program like Win DVD or Power DVD which contain the CODEC. Once such a program is installed you can either use that program, or Windows Media Player to play DVD movies.
Both sites offer trial versions for free, that will install the DVD codec onto your system - you can then use Windows Media Player to view DVD's - and also to change your Region within WMP.
True, changing Hardware/Hardware settings is a huge pain in the rear - I wouldn't even try it, as I don't have the patience (or skill, knowlege, experience, etc.)
I just wanted to offer one solution to the posted question (agreed, there are many possible solutions) that has worked well for me.
The site you post is a good one, although it's fairly narrow in it's focus. Going the software route works. It's quick, easy, and painless. From the site you posted:

Making your software DVD player region free is actually quite easy. While strictly speaking, most of the tools below (except for DVD Region Killer and DVD Region-Free) aren't really making your software DVD player region free, but rather, giving you the ability to change the region settings of these players without decreasing the region-change counter, effectively allowing to change the region settings of the software DVD player for an unlimited number of times.
In anycase, everyday some talented 12 year old hacker is coming up with a new way to answer this question - to allow us to use software to view dvd's from different regions - this is sarcasm... kind of... but not really...
Anyway, I appreciate your posts. You clearly know your stuff. If I've missed anything, or misunderstood anything you wrote, let me know?

And good luck to them!

We believe region coding to be an unnecessary annoyance, which interferes with the legitimate use of technology. If content suppliers wish to fight piracy they need to make the content available in the form the consumer wants, and at a price that reflects the actual cost. We strongly believe that piracy is immoral, but so too is greed, the market for legitimate unprotected content at reasonable prices is huge. Books did not destroy the world, they transformed it, because information is power. The fact we can share books, and that libraries exist has not destroyed the publishing and authoring industries. Technology should be empowering, and not restrictive. The concept of a Trusted Computer Architecture will ultimately fail when we all reject it as making our lives more difficult and less productive. So take our wooden shoes and stick them into the machines.
