Hey Jer,

Thanks for the offer! I still have my mind set on the orange M50 though.

Thanks!

That girl on the nokia page is like grotesque!!

Anyway, I think I may break down and buy a tri-band.

Siemens M55

Then if I'm feeling really rambunctions I may break down and buy one just for Spain. Ladies, what's your opinion on this blatant waste of cash on electronics?

Hi all,

I'm trying to find out exactly how much money I would be spending on SIM cards while I'm in Madrid. Does anyone know how many euros I'd have to pay for, I dunno, about 100 minutes?

Hey Mikey, all depends...

1) Prepaid or contract plan?
2) 100 minutes to where and at what time of the day?

Like everything, it is a bit more complex sinmce the SIMs here do not have "minutes" but rather Euros.

There are also different call plans at diff. rates and to diff places (within Spain or abroad).

For example, at www.spainsim.com you can get all the info you need on the Vodafone SIMs (best call rates and deal overall). Specifically the section at www.spainsim.com/vodafone .

There is also an online shop for retail at www.spainsim.com/retail.htm with a super AWESOME deal on a Vodafone SIM with approx $100 call credit for $99.95.

Frowner I know I will miss my mega-minute 40$ sprint plan when i leave.

I guess I was trying to find out rates. Since I already know my approx. monthly minute usage here in NY (and I know I won't be making as many calls when I'm in Spain because I won't have friends there lol!)that website gave me the info I need to try and plan how much monthly I would be spending in recharge credits.

Jer, are there contract plans in Spain? Would I have to purchase a phone from the provider or could I bring my own and have them set it up?.

I wasn't aware that if I bought a SIM in Spain I'd be charged roaming if I go outside. I guess it makes sense though.

One question. Well I guess it depends on the plan but. How come I see everyone and their mother on the moviles in Madrid? It seems like credits can run out very quickly if you don't pay attention. I didn't see the recharge rates? Do you happen to know the increments they are offered in?

Ooh ooh one other thing.

Since I'd be calling my girlfriend mostly (she has movistar) Do you know if there are any discounts when calling from movistar movil to another movistar movil? B/c if that's the case then I would get a movistar SIM.

Thanks a lot man.

Hey Mikey.

You can start on a prepaid SIM plan and just change over to contract at any distributor. Any balance left in the SIM when you change to contract will be credited to your first monthly bill(s). You just need a Spanish bank account to have a contract plan, see the thread on SPANISH BANK ACCOUNTS

And their dog!!! It's a way of life over here :jeje:

Many have contract plans so the credit does not run out and there are sooooooo many places to add call credit here that those on prepaid plans do not worry about running out.

For recharge vouchers (scratch off cards sold almost everywhere)

 Vodafone: Increments of 15.
Movistar: Most often distributors offer the 20 recharge card but you can add in increments of 5.
Amena: increments of 10 (I think).

Some go to the Corte Ingls phone dept. since there you can add a min. of 10 to Vodafone and just 5 to Movistar.

Yes, although Movistar has the worst call rates of all the ops., it is alwasy cheaper to call from one op. to the same op. (ie. Vodafone to Vodafone has a 3 cent/minute for life plan between 2 phone #s you choose, like you and your gal but you she would have to change to Vodafone Big Grin ) than from one op. to another (ie. Vodafone to Movistar).

Blah Blah.

THere's a place in the city selling the m55 for 215. I think I'll wait because I dont wanna shell out the 100$ for a sim card/# while i'm in the states for only 2 months more. Besides when i'm ready to go maybe the phone price will come down.
