I would like to buy me a DVD Player to see Films in original version and to hear and learn English faster. But, I've seen that also, there are already DVD Recorders in the U.S. market. I know that in the U.S. always go ahead of us in the technological way.

I would like to know if the DVD Recorders are widely used in the U.S. or whether the people still prefer a Player to a Recorder.

I don't know if I should wait 8 months to buy a DVD Recorder or to buy now a DVD Player. The different between prices is very big nowadays. I've found a Philips DVD Recorder for $1900 and there are Players for less than $300. Do you think that in just 8 months the Recorder's cost will go down near $700?.

Thanks

Hey totx, do you want a player or a recorder? The title of this thread is Buying a DVD recorder but you state you want a player.

Actually, the recorder is also available here in Spain at most computer stores and has been for months.

I saw one at the fnac the other day for about 900 Euros Eeker not sure what they are going for in the U.S.A. but 900 Euros seemed steep to me.

I do not have a recorder but have 2 DVD players (one on my Desktop and the other on my laptop) and I use the graphics card on my laptop connected to the TV through a video out cable to watch DVD movies on my TV Big Grin

Having 2 players on my computers, I do not want to spend more on a normal DVD player.

Another benefit to the DVD player on a laptop computer is that it is meant to travel and should play both American and European DVDs (like a dual player) which is great if you want to take advantage of the lower DVD prices in the states Smiler

ANother problem with the DVD recorders (both in the U.S.A. and all over the world) is that teh blank DVDs still cost a fortune (about 15-20 Euros each here) which makes it almost as cheap to buy the original DVD movie, plus, if you record you are also risking a failure and a wasted blank DVD.

In my opinion recorders are great however for data recording and backing up stuff on a computer, loads of storage space.

$1,900 is a lot for a recorder, as I said, i saw one at the fnac for 900 Euros. I am sure prices of recorders and blank DVDs will come down soon. Remember when DVD players were first out they cost like 500 Euros (83.000 pesetas) or more and now you can get one for under 250 Euros if you shop around.

Hey Rachel, as we discussed on the phone today, try changing your PCs DVD settings to PAL (European, etc... standard) and away from NTSC (U.S.A., etc.. standard).

Hi There!

I have a lot of DVD movies from the US and I have to watch them thru my Sony laptop bought in the Us also. Each DVD movie is made for a different zone (1-2-3-4) Spain is Zone 2. So you cant play Dvds movies from the US in a European DVD System.

Salu2,

Rachel

Hey Rachel23, thanks for the input. I use the DVD on my laptop as well to watch DVDs on my TV. It is a pretty good solution although the quality is not the same as with a dedicated DVD player.

ToniG, as far as I know there is no such adapter Frowner

Hi Tony!

to watch it on a dedicated DVD player you would need a region free DVD player... ebay lists several makers. Or, another option take ur DVD player to a "local" shop and have them make it region free for u.

also, spanish movies are available in the US..that u can watch no problem...espinazo del diablo and todo sobre mi madre are just two but there are many. the movie rental stores can order movies for u to watch as well.

have fun!! Big Grin

Hello!

If you just want a European player, BBVA bank is giving a free one if you put some money on deposit there (I think it pays 3% interest). Its a portable Sony. Heh! If anyone gets it, let us know how it is! Wink

Hey Val, saw that ad on the boob tube as well Big Grin

BBVA will indeed give you a basic DVD player but the...

"some money on deposit"
... is a whopping 10,000 Euros Eeker

You have to leave it there for 2 years as well.

Darn banks are getting smarter and making you leave the cash there long term thanks to people like... um... me who put the bucks in and then take them right out again to get the gifts Big Grin

Maybe someone can answer a question for me about buying a DVD player... Im going to Tenerife next week and I know that their sales tax is only a fraction of the tax here in Madrid. Does anyone know if buying electronics there would save me enough money to be worth the hassle? Just wondering if I should hold out another week or make the purchase this weekend. Thanks!
