Hi, all,
I am back in Calif and a Spanish friend who is visiting here wants to purchase a Blackberry to use in Madrid. Can a US-purchased Blackberry be activated in Spain? I did a search already and found info about unlocking cell phones, but I don't know if it's the same for a Blackberry. I apolgize in advance, but I really don't know much about these devices...
Thank you to anyone who can offer any advice! I'm a bit low-tech myself!

hi CaliforniaGirl.

if the handset is SIM free (unlocked), he will be able to use it for voice ONLY here without a bberry account in spain. in order to use it for data (which, in my opinion, is the purpose of a berry), he will need a blackberry spain account and as far as i know, they are only available via the spanish ops (vodafone and movistar) and they provide them when you sign up for a contract and buy the handset here in spain.

in other words, i am not sure if you can just bring your own blackberry and sign up for the blackberry account here.

see www.blackberry.com/es/solutions/home_personal/index.shtml for more.

i need to go to vodafone today so i will ask when i am there and come back to this thread.

saludos,
jer...

Jer, you are so the best. Thanks so much! I really look forward to hearing what you find out about it. You are right, my friend wants to use the Blackberry for data, as well as for a phone.

My friend could buy a blacberry in Madrid, but he would really like to buy it here to take advantage of the favorable exchange rate between the dollar and the euro.

We looked at cameras yesterday, and the price difference was about 90Euros less if he buys it here in CA. So I'm thinking the situation with the blackberry could be the same.
