I stumbled across a Russian supermarket the other day: superb wurst-type sausages and a very respectable line of vodka and beers, along with some cabbage-y stuff in jars, black bread and loads of other stuff.

The name´s unreadable, but it´s at General Yague, 55, just a few blocks north of metro Estrecho, turn right where Bravo Murillo meets General Yague.

Makes a nice change from Champion anyway.

There is a new Ukrainian supermarket on C/Rafael de Riego (between Atocha and Delicias Renfe stations) too. From outside it looks
quite expensive.

I wonder about the business model of these places. Are there _that_ many people from there living here? If it were aimed at "us" then they´d use Roman characters. Stephen

Anybody has seen a Polish store yet? wink (although Russian/Ukrainian deli would be where I'd shop in Cali since there were no Polish markets around and they'd carry small Polish assortment) I'll be looking for one pronto, after I bring my mother for winter.

i don't think so, i doubt they would survive on the small percentage of the ukrainian madrid community that finds them but i think that they also catch the interest of other nationalities, even spaniards and perhaps they carry other food goods like Ola said... perhaps it is the mysterious marketing tactic they are after.

i for one love to go into the chinese food stores that have their signs in chinese and poke around, loads of fun.

or maybe it is a ukranian mafia front and the sign says, "foreigner, you come in here, we break legs" eeker die laughing

No, I haven't seen InMadrid and would love to read it! Where do I find it?

BTW, if anybody needs a translation when going to those stores, I can read the cyrillic writing and could probably translate most of the food related writings (and maybe some others), so let me know if you need help.

The In Madrid article says that there is a Polish market in Aluche.

BTW there is a Hispano-Polaco Museum in Somosierra (north of Madrid), in the Ayuntamiento, commemorating the Battle of Somosierra between Spanish and Polish troops.

(What battle this? Ed.)
It was in 1808, the Poles were fighting for Napoleon.

You have to phone in advance if you want to visit it.

There's another Russian (or Ukrainian--not sure) grocer on the street that runs along the north side of the Jardines de Sabatini and Campo del Moro. It's on the north side of the street about halfway between Plaza del Oriente and Principe Pio.
