Hi Cartman... About a year ago, I built 3 simple computers through APP Informtica for our language academy with the following humble specs:
- Basic Genius Tower
- Elite motherboard
- AMD XP 1,8 ghz
- 256 MB DDR RAM
- TV out video card
- LG DVD Player
- Genius Keyboard, Mouse & 200 Wt speakers (No monitor)
for around 330,00 each. Don't know how that compares to Canada, but I believe it was about as economical a price for that type of a computer as you could get around here at that time. Hope that helps you a bit. poseso.... Tony --- English Unlimited... Un ambiente para aprender ingls... (An English Learning Environment)

It will be a lot cheaper to put the computers together and get everything with right european (Spain) specs from here even if you have to mail order the things that you can not find locally in the computer superstores. The only other thing would be if you contacted the manufacturers directly like DELL for example and bought the correct models for Spain you might be able to negotiate a discount for buying in bulk. This would be doing the billing and paying the better price in Canada, but having the delivery/shipping sent to the address in Spain after comparing for the best prices.

Does Madrid have good deals on laptops too? Our friend from Jerez is returning in a few weeks...she was interested in looking for a laptop before she returns but I thought I'd ping you guys first to see if it's worthwhile just to buy it in Madrid instead.

Hi Paul/Irene.
PC-City opposite the Arguelles Metro have got some fairly good deals on at the moment, and I think it's always worth taking a look around in there, because they often have some really incredible special offers.
I go in there quite often, and am kicking my self at the moment for not buying the Fuji Digital Camera they had on special offer a couple of weeks ago, for 199.00 euros, it was a 6 Mega pixel with 4x digital & 4x regular zoom, 16 megs of memory etc, but could not make up my mind about it, and so left it for a while to think about it, but now, well you can't find a 6 Mega pixel Camera for 199 euros, not for love nor money.
oh well, next time perhaps. Anyway, I recommend having a look in there. It's easy to find, almost right across the road from the Metro and in the side street. They've always got tons of bargains in there.
Buena Suerte.
 Nigel.

Back in October, I bought my aforementioned laptop with a small, local company called ADLI ( HERE'S THEIR HOME PAGE). ADLI has the distinction of being located in Villaviciosa de Odn (SW Madrid) where I live. I was able to take advantage of a sweet sale at that time. Pentium IV 2,4, (Did you hear it? Paul just said: "Pentium! Yeah!!" 512MB RAM, 40 GB HD and all the other bells and whistles you'd expect. All this, brand new for a shade under 800 euros. That's the best price I've seen in Madrid for a brand new laptop personally. poseso.... Tony --- English Unlimited... Un ambiente para aprender ingls... (An English Learning Environment)

hey Paul, in my opinion, excellent deals (eg. Tony's above) aside, laptops are quite a bit cheaper in u.s.a. than they are in spain. saludos, jer...

I did just find out that our friend's source of funding is in dollars instead of Euros, so after, so considering the exchange rate, we ordered a Dell from here.

Speaking of computers, I have a question that might seem elementary for all of you computer pro's out there, but here it goes... I bought a Dell laptop here in the States a few months ago and I was hoping to take it with me when I move to Madrid in November. One of my big concerns is with the electrical plugs. Will I have any problems finding a charger for my lap top that will be compatable with both my computer and Spain's electrical outlets? Also, I was told that most software bought in the US will have copyright laws that prevent me from using it in other countries. Does anybody know anything about this? Will any of this be a problem if I plan to use my computer there on a regular basis? From what I've read on this thread already, it seems like it shouldn't be a problem, but I'm really not sure what I should be looking for. Can anyone help me out.
