What about St. Vincent de Paul? Do they have that in Spain? Kind of Catholic Salvation Army/Goodwill?

I don't rememember seeing any thrift stores, especially those you mention. I think that in general the concept of buying used clothing is uncommon. My Spanish friends have told me that the concept of even sharing baby or maternity clothes with someone other than family members is considered distasteful, even if they clothes are in perfect condition. I wonder what happens to all that clothing, does it just end up in a closet, or is it turned into rags? Just differences in culture...Hey my whole house is furnished with solid oak furniture that I bought at yard sales and flea markets, then refinished.

Hi there,
I have read that the British Ladies Club has a thrift shop, but I've never been. It could be good as they have tons of good used books at their Chistmas fair.
I hate to toss my old stuff, so we take it in the car to "Reto" which has thrift shops, fixing up the old stuff and then the proceeds go to help reformed/reforming drug addicts. Most Spaniards, however, just throw their old things, even if in perfect condition, into the trash bins. I found a great coffee table next to the trash bin by my house!

Hey Sue, last time ena and her sister Carmen took bags of used clothes to a local church that was supposed to be accepting donations of such, they were told that they did not want them and they had to lug the bags back home  Val, you are fast becoming an invaluable source of info on this board  I can't believe that I forgot to mention the British Ladies Association and their "boot sales" (a "boot" is a trunk in British English) which are similiar to American garage or yard sales. They even have a pemanent add in my CLASSIFIEDS SECTION under "clubs general" and always announce their charity shop, here is the ad... quote: THE BRITISH LADIES ASSOCIATION Charity Shop will be re-opening on Thursday, October 3, 11am-3pm, also Saturday, October 5, 11am-3pm and then every Thursday 11am-3pm and every first Saturday of the month, 11am-3pm. I forgot to add "dumpster diving" to my furniture sources too! I have an old 1950's hardwood television cabinet (with french doors) that makes an awesome stereo cabinet. I found it in an alley about 15 years ago. ...I do find it somewhat ironic that while Americans are considered to be the most wasteful people on earth, many of us (unlike residents of some other affluent countries) will use previously-owned items, as well as donate our unwanted goods rather than throw them in the trash...

Okay, reviving an old thread looking for up-to-date info. I am leaving Spain  and am leaving behind a nice stack of clothes, mostly jeans and business casual ladies' slacks. I talked to Jacky @ British Ladies Accociation, which is out of my way in Las Rosas, and she advised me to check in @ St. George's @ the corner of Nunez de Balboa & Hermosilla. I am going to try to find an interpreter and head there today. I'll let you all know what I find out. In the mean time, does anyone else have any new info to guide me? Thanks, jar |

hey jar. i recall seeing those charity clothing bins around. only place i am sure there is one is in front of the alcampo in pio xii (metro linew 9 - purple) up by plaza castilla. if i see one more central i will post here. saludos, jer...

I found a couple of second hand stores in Madrid, if I remember correctly one in calle Mayor another one in Bravo Murillo, but this was a few years back and I haven't returned so I can't garantee that they still exist. However, one thing that I noticed is that they had prices that did not compare to second hand stores in the US, it would be cheaper to buy clothes at a Todo a cien than in one of these. Lena
