hey stephen, for several years now i've always gifted folks not in spain with a paella pan. even if they don't make paella, it is a beautiful thing to hang on a kitchen wall, also...i don't know in the uk...but in the us they are hard to find and if you do, you will shell out a fortune. here a pan for 8 folks will set you back only about 12 euros in any ferreteria. also you can supplement the pan with a couple of topnotch olive oils. go to this olive oil shop for some beauties... Patrimonia Comunal Olivarero You could also include a bottle of nice sherry and maybe an easy-to-follow paella recipe. Candela

Lladro is hugely popular with the "older" British tourists here. (No, not me ) I am not sure whether the younger newlyweds like it though!! Candys idea of a paella pan sounded good to me, and as my daughter is getting married next month I may suggest that to any guests who ask! (edited 10th!!)

I suggested Lladr as it is something so traditional. My parents, knowing my love of Spain, gave us as an engagement gift a Lladr piece signed by his daughter. Some Lladr pieces are really tacky. I prefer the matte collection and the ones that are more neutral in color. But, dont have the money nor the place to collect them (I collect free things like matchbooks from around the world ) Candys idea of the paella pan reminds me of what I did for a friends wedding. When she got married, I helped plan her bridal shower and all the attendees got "cuencos de barro" with a small bottle of olive oil and a recipe for gazpacho. Stephen, why dont you try going to El Corte Ingls and try chatting up one of the girls in the bridal registry section. I am sure they will be more than happy to offer you ideas and suggestions!

Okay, so we're talking about presents generally now (unless the original wedding on this thread was postponed). Here are my humble suggestions: Ash-trays - For those with bad habits Sets of coffee cups. Real Madrid shirts (for the nippers) ..almost forgot, look out for Persian carpets. At the least you should be able to get 30% cheaper than in a UK shop. Having said that, eBay may be a better option if you can handle the auction bidding.

I liked Candy's suggestion of Paella pans as gifts. I've been looking around for them, but I really want something old fashioned and 'traditional' looking. All I can find at the ferreterias are modern looking pans with coloured handles. Any suggestions for where one might be able to find old style paella pans???

More than once I've given hand embroidered tablecloths as wedding gifts. It is a pretty traditional Spanish thing, it's unique and it doesn't have to be expensive. Plus it's not a heavy or breakable gift so it's easy to take in your suitcase. There are all kinks, some are simple, some colorful, some are very elegant. There are a few shops between Callao and Sol where they can be bought. Lena

Thanks Mariposta, I'm sure I haven't been to the shop you mentioned. I will check it out. And great idea Lena. Some of those tablecloths are really beautiful, and a unique gift. Maria is going to buy one for my Mum (ooohhh... que bonito) And you are right; there really are some kinks between Callao and Sol. Oh, who am I to be picking on other people's typos?
