Hey Paul, I used to love going to Turner's! :l: , but as far as I know, it was on cl Gnova, near Alonso Martinez. They had also a much smaller place on cl Orense, but I liked the big one much better. They had a great message board (back when there were only a handful around ) and a section with movies to rent on the back, some of them quite strange, and impossible to find in most places (in their original languages too) for a while, such as Woody Allen's Zelig which I remember getting there, and it's hilarious. I was quite sad that they closed it (now it's Pasajes Intlernational Bookshop, where I've never been)

I was curious if any of the bookshops in Madrid might possibly have English translations of any of Baroja's works? Jose Luis Castillo-Puche's work on Hemingway mentions the great author, but all seem to be in Spanish.

I did not have a lot of success when I visited the calle de los libreros. I also visited Salamanca and no luck there either. I did buy some wonderful tomes of Unamuno, poncela and Baroja in Spanish.
Unfortunately, most of Pio Baroja's works in English are out of print. You can get these in English in various second-hand online bookstores like Alibris, Half.com, ABE books here in the U.S. Most are copies from Spanish and Comparative literature professors. I did a search in AddAll.com, which is the most comprehensive search tool of all ABA online bookstores and they have several used translations.
Don't be turned off by the term used, most are really like new, they've been sitting on a shelf for years and no one bought it, but because there is some shelf wear, booksellers call these used.
Let me know if I can help. Carmen

Thanks for the info.....most of the stuff I get now is out of print and I have to scramble. Just found a work by Robert Collodny (International Brigades) on the Seige of Madrid by surfing on the net.
If only I liked the something-less-than-cerebral stuff that's coming out nowadays (ie Hillary, Al Franken, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, etc.) I'd have a much easier time of it, but my mind would be mooshier than it is already.

I've ordered many books from amazon in the uk and amazon in france. Amazon also has a German website. They ship to Spain without any problems. Just a hint, the three different amazons in Europe all have separate inventories. One time I found a book in amazon.co.uk that would have taken 6-8 weeks to get to me but then I found the same book in amazon.fr that could ship immediately and got to me in a week. If you know a little spanish and look at the amazon site in English you can get through the French site without too many problems.

Hey guys! Finally got around to visiting Petra's International Bookshop today, what a great place. Bought a couple of used books, pretty cheap! Sad, did you all know that the kitty died? I was so looking forward to meeting her. Anyway, great bookshop, I highly reccommend it if you're just looking for something but don't know what! Besos, Joy

Does anyone know of a bookstore where I can buy used textbooks? I'm looking for a used latin textbook from the bachillerato (don't ask).
And since mm is all about give and take... The bookstore in the new wing of the Reina Sofia is very good--well worth a visit. There is also a very promising looking new library right next door (it looks like they have movies and multimedia stuff too). And there is a swanky new cafe as well. You don't have to pay to get to these (or to go the old bookstore and gift shop for that matter), but you do have to enter in the back where the big funky looking modern building is.
P.S. I didn't even know that she existed, but now I'm sad about Petra's kitty.

I was in Petra's just a few weeks ago. I am going to assume they got a new kittie b/c there was definitely one wandering around, unless Stphen King now owns Petra's... I love the place but, unfortunately, even their low prices arent low enough for this English teacher who has to fly home in a couple weeks. SO...
I have been told that it is very helpful for learners of Spanish to read mainstream easy books, such as Grisham, Tom Clancy, Ken Follet, JK Rowlings, etc. in Spanish. I am wondering if there is anywhere to go to get like 3/1EU books with these kinds of authors or if anyone of y'all have any on your shelves you might want to share. I can't offer much except my gratitude and support on any of YOUR future endeavors and searches. I can give services easier than I can give $ these days.
PS - Fabriio has been kind enough to leave to me some Bowling Chamartin coupons so if anyone is interested, we can start a new thread and hook up. I'm a GREAT bowler afer a few beers!
Thanks, Jar

ok, petra's used to be called the "international bookshop" and is a pretty cool place one of the first second-hand bookshops in madrid specializing in foreign lang. books.
as for 3x1 euro books, pretty sure not gonna happen in spain, books ar in(famously) expensive here.
as for bowlong, no need to start a new thread, just get used to the search function on the board (oh if i had a euro for every repeated thread that has been started here), there is a bowling thread HERE.
we started a bowling get together last year around thanksgiving and went a few times. we all had a GREAT time but it died out since the "organizer" (sorry "holaaaaaaaaaa" ) did not keep it together. it takes some initiative and would be fun to start up again as a winter activity. count me in if you want to organize. see the BOWLING THREAD (all 4 pages).
jer-- Thanks for the links. That second site is very useful. Unfortunately, it looks like folks have an unholy attachment to their high school latin books. No one wants to sell them.
Time to go check out the library and see if I can find one there...
