I know this is silly, but we just moved here, into the area of Chamberi, from the US (for the summer). How do you find the closest grocery stores (other than walking around a lot - which is easier said than done with little ones)? Also, where do you buy simple things like trash bags, light bulbs, clothes racks (to dry clothes on balcony)??? Thanks for any ideas!!

LisaAnn--
Not sure what the closest grocery stores are for you, you could try doing a search on paginasamarillas.es. It lets you put in a business type and your address and search within a certain radius. You could also try looking up the names of supermarkets like Mercadona, Día, Maxidía, Carrefour, etc. If you are looking for fruterías and smaller food stores, make sure to do so outside of the hours that they close 9ish-2 and 5:30-8:00. Otherwise they'll be closed up tight.

Perfumerías have trash bags, laundry soap and that kind of stuff.

Electricidad stores have light bulbs, you can also get them at the "Todo a cien" discount type stores.

Ferreterías also have light bulbs and clothes racks--not to mention cheap pots and pans and dishes--you can also probably get a clothes rack at a "todo a cien" store.

Thanks Mariposita! I don't know why I didn't think of "yellow pages". We explored all day yesterday, but if we had walked one block in a different direction we would have found lots more! I'll let you know how it goes after today...

On another note, a long time ago I asked you about summer camps for children. Upon recommendation from another friend in Madrid, we are trying Parque Secreto (not far from where we are living), which has summer camp with bilingual counselors for our girls (who are very new to Spanish). Heard anything about it?

Hey Lisa Ann--
Is that the place (ludoteca) near San Bernardo that is a huge indoor playground? My son loves that place. Lots of kids have their birthdays parties there. I don't know anything about their camp, but I'll bet your girls will love playing there.

I know what you mean about walking around... to this day I sometimes walk down a street in my 'hood at a different time of the day than usual and discover places that I've never seen before (and I've lived here for four years).

The one place that you can go to get everything is El Corte Inglés (the big department store), but you'll pay a big premium to do so...

I´d say Carrefour (not to confuse with Carrefour Express) should be similar to Walmart (not that I ever shopped at Walmart)... I´d think they got "everything" under one roof.

Yes - it is the place near San Bernardo. We went this morning to finalize everything and it looks really nice. Best thing is they will let both our girls (ages 8 & almost 4) be together if the little one gets 'afraid'.

Another shopping question. We have decided we are up for the walking, but not while carrying the 3 year old!! Any ideas on good places to get a very inexpensive (as in only going to use it 10 weeks) stroller? We have only found really nice expensive ones...

hey LisaAnn.

please try keeping your shopping questions here and the camps question on the camps thread you already posted on way back.

it will avoid a messy and confusing thread.

... which is true but i find that you will save time and money of you just get these things at the supermarket. for example, both día and mercadona (the ones we shop at most) have trash bags and light bulbs and you will generally pay less than at an electrical store.

yep, Ola is right carrefour would be the closest thing to walmart here (as mariposita noted, el corte inglés is not really walmartish since it is NOT cheap). however, you will need a car (or spend 1.5 hours on metro or bus) to get to most carrefour stores as the really big ones are outside of the city.

jer...

Hi LisaAnn and Canadian_in_Madrid,

Welcome to Madrid!

As far as a cheap stroller, you can try posting a message on Craig's list/Madrid (www.craigslist.org) or Loquo which is like a Spanish version of Craigs List (www.loquo.com).

I will also ask the families in our playgroup if they have one they want to sell or lend. Send me a private message with your contact details.

You can also try Cash Converters (www.cashconverters.es) which sells second hand things.

Apart from Carrefour, which is usually located outside the city center, you can also try Alcampo. There is one in La Vaguada (http://www.enlavaguada.com/)shopping center in the Barrio de Pilar. It is also a Walmart type hyper market with everything under one roof...

Well, there is a fairly large Carrefour at metro Mar de Cristal (line 4 and 8) which is not that far from the center.

hey LisaAnn

ena (my wife) and i are also in the market for a new stroller as the one we have is too bulky to travel with now that our son is nearly a year old and no longer needs the basinet part.

we usually go to the corte inglés to try out all the baby stuff since they normally have the best selection of brands and you can touch and test-drive there. then we go to carrefour and buy the one we like big grin

sometimes however, el corte inglés has sales and such. i was there today and i saw this stroller...

http://www.elcorteingles.es/multitienda/producto/produc...138&tipoTienda=BEBES

it looked pretty decent quality and it was 45 euros (on sale until june 29th).

they had a few diff. colors at the corte inglés in sol.

saludos,
jer...

p.d. if you go for it, don't buy the "bolso neceser" that you will see attached to the stroller. our current stroller came with one of those bags and while the stroller is great, the bad is crap.

That is great advice - thanks! We had planned to venture to Carrefour Saturday to check it out, but will go to the corte ingles if there isn't better there. 49 sounds well worth it after all the carrying I did today!

Also good advice on the bag, I probably would have tried it, thinking I would save carrying a bag of stuff around, but my memory of strollers (we stopped using them in the US when our youngest was about 12 months), was you can hang a bag on the handle while you push!

Thought I would give an update on today's shopping trips! Thanks to the earlier advice on paginasamarillos, I found 2 grocery stores really near (how could I have missed them). There is a Dia a bit farther away, I'll probably check that out this weekend. So far SuperSol is the closest that seemed to have some selection in it.

Also the toda a cien was a hit for the laundry basket, pots and odds and ends we needed.

Thanks again!!

If you have SuperSol near by then I wouldn't bother with crappy Dia. I have 3 of them within a couple of blocks from my piso and I go there only about once a month to buy muesli. All other neighborhood supermarkets are imho *much* better.

crappy Dia

hmmmm... suppose it depends on the día. most are very small and unorganized but ours (calle toledo just south of plaza mayor) is a "maxi día" and is excellent (very big, well organized and has most everything). it used to be a "champion" before día bought it.

LisaAnn, i normally would love a bag on a stroller but that particular one they sell has buttons that do not hold with any kind of weight in the bag, they unsnap and the bag just keeps falling. so, we scrapped the one we have on our stroller and we use a large backpack which holds more, straps onto the stroller well and is the perfect solution.

saludos,
jer...
