Thanks for the list of "librerías" in Madrid.

I also have a question related to books: Is it advisable to send books from the U.S. to Madrid? How long would they take to arrive? Would I have to pay customs duties if the books were used?

Gracias,

Marsha

Marsha, I've had some boxes of books sent from the US to Spain. It's fantastically cheap if you send them with the US postal service in what are called M-bags.

I have never had any problems with customs when sending things through the post office (and that includes several rather large boxes of brand new books) but I have had to pay customs on some items that were sent via UPS or FedEx.

Cheers,
Steve

Fantastic! I'm going to look into sending books I can't live without this way. Do you remember how long they took to arrive?

I believe 4 to 6 weeks, from memory.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks, Steve. I'll try to find room in my luggage for any books I can't live without and send the rest by the "slow boat to Europe".

I've also sent lots of books from the US to Spain in various batches (around 15 boxes total!) via the slow boat. It usually takes around four weeks, sometimes six. A few have gotten stopped in customs, but not in the last year. Try not to include any CDs or DVDs, if you can help it (these seem to get stuck more than anything). The last batch that I sent this summer got delivered right to my door (a luxury compared to having to pick it up at the post office).

P.S. A pox on UPS Spain--several bad recent experiences with them.

Yes, customs officers especially like anything by Green Day, I'm told. die laughing

I once saw a CD 'salesman' in the Rastro get chased by Guardia Civil, receive a good telling off and the Guardia walked off with about 100 CDs and DVDs to add to his collection. What could the guy do - he got away with not being arrested, he's not going to be able to make a complaint.

A friend told me that the key to sending books is to write USED BOOKS on the box. I did it and my package didn't have a problem going through. I also shipped it by boat and my two boxes of books arrived in six weeks.

If you do the boat thing, please wrap your books in plasctic bags, I double wrapped mine, for you never know if any liquid will be spilled on your box. Better to be safe than sorry.

I wonder if I should also write "used books" in Spanish on the box I ship my books in.

Hi Marsha,

I say DO IT and be on the safe side. I did it when I shipped my books home.

Let us know the final outcome.

Shawn

Hi Shawn,

Having some of my library with me in Madrid will help keep homesickness away, so I'll do everything I can to see that my books arrive safely and in good condition to my new home.

Thanks again,

Marsha

I went to my local post office, and they weren't too clear about using M-bags for sending books. I asked if I had to put the books in the bag loose, or if I could pack them in boxes first, before putting them in the M-bags. The person I spoke to thought I could but wasn't entirely sure since she has never dealt with this service herself. Can anyone who has shipped books this way help me out?

Mil gracias,

Marsha
