My cheapo digital camera just bit the dust (of course one month after the warranty ran out).

Where should I go to buy a new one? I checked out El Corte Ingles and FNAC, but I'm sure that the mmers know of a better place to get a good deal. I'm probably going to buy a Canon powershot...

P.S. This place that I found online has some good deals:

http://www.pixmania.com

But it's located in Barcelona--I'd rather buy from someplace here in Madrid.

I bought a digital camera from Madrid HiFi for 300 euros that was at 380 in FNAC and 450 in El Corte Ingles. Their stuff is always loads cheaper, but you only get one week to take things back, otherwise its the manufacturers guarantee only, That said, it hasnt gone wrong (Panasonic DMC-F1 by the way, works really well and has cool Leica lens). Another really good cheap shop is Media Markt (the one whose red supplement you get in the middle of Sundays El Pais, theyre on the edge of town with Ikea and all those): I bought a computer there, but on finding I couldnt change the language of the bundled software they took it back without even bothering to ask me any more. They are much cheaper again. All that said, I just bought my MP3 player from El Corte Ingles as theyre a bit delicate and the two year exchange thing is cool if youre a bit unsure, but what with this being Madrid with all its rabid pickpockets it probably wont last that long anyway! (buy front pocket size...) Hope this helps

hey mariposita.

your wanting to buy in madrid does not make much sense to me.

you see, the return policy at all shops here is 7 or 14 days in the shop if someting is wrong with it and then after that, you will need to take it to the manufacturer.

buying online will save you a lot of cash, especially if you buy via a site that sells in u.s.a.

see the thread at www.multimadrid.com/cgi-bin/jersbbucgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=18;t=000129 Cool

www.getdigital.com is where i bought my last camera (sony cybershot dsc f707) and i saved a ton

their cannon page is HERE and they have plenty of powershot cams. you can compare prices with the shops people send you to in madrid.

don't buy electronics in spain unless you absolutely have to.

saludos,
jer...

Good point, Jer.

Looks like the Catalan place is a good deal, because the prices are pretty comparable to US prices and less if you factor in shipping, taxes, etc. Will check out Madrid Hifi to compare (don't think I have the stamina to go back out to Ikea-land...).

Looked all over today and the camera we want--Canon Powershot A80--was sold out everywhere, so we'll definitely be buying online.

Andorrafreemarket is super-barato--the cheapest we've found. Says they offer a 3 year warranty on top of the manufacturer's 2 year warranty.

Will report back on how it goes. Thanks again for the info.

I recommend Mediamarkt if you have one near you. If not, it's well worth travelling. You can see their locations on www.mediamarkt.es I buy nearly all of my electrical stuff there and I'ne never had any problems. A DECT phone I bought packed up the week before the guarantee expired and they just handed me a new one. I also bought a digital camera there and a spare memory stick. Nearly a month later, seeing that they had 128MB sticks I bought back the one I bought before (64MB) to exchange it and because my camera had gone down by 50 euros they actually refunded money to me! Incredible, but true. I would NEVER ever bother buying anything again from places like Carrefour, El Corte, Miro etc. I can't recommend Mediamarkt highly enough. After being conned for years by so many shadey rip off merchants it's nice to actually be able to buy at a reasonable price with excellent service. It's a German company so they're serious and efficient and the staff actually know about the product they sell. In the music and DVD sections you can ask questions and they can actually answer you! Other shops please take note!

Ever so slightly off-topic, but anyone know where I can get a good 40Gb mp3 player cheaply? None of the sites mentioned by you lot so far have any.

I think I'm after the Creative Zen Xtra. Not seen anything else cheap enough or good enough.

hey gmgibbs, thanks for the input.

i have also purchased some products at mediamarkt (the one in ss. de los reyes) and have never had probs, alwasy been happy with the service (in-store).

however, i am calling them as i type this to consult whether or not they have a product (since their website ia horrid: no online shop, no catalogue, etc...) and their telephone support seems just as bad. i have been transferred to the audio/video dept. 3 times and all 3 times my call was dropped.

on the positive side, i got to listen to jamiroquai as i waited to be cut off :jeje:

i did get through on the 4th call so it is not a total loss.

moral: no store is perfect.

all in all, i can recommend mediamarkt too.

saludos,
jer...

p.d. Cervantes, i know zero about mp3, sorry can't be of more help Frowner

Cervantes why don't you go to SIMO, the huge computer/electronics expo which is going on now at the Juan Carlos I convention center. If I am not mistaken, the tradeshow runs through Sunday and is open to the public Saturday and Sunday.

Just a thought. I am certain you will find what you are looking for there at a great price.

I ended up buying my digital camera from Pixmania.com, which is a French company with a store in Barcelona and an online store. They had the best deal at the time.

They only problem I had was with delivery--not really Pixmania's fault--it was August and DHL was completely out to lunch.

Hmm... thanks guys for suggesting SIMO, you would THINK they would sold products to the general public, but no... Other than the omnipotent, omnipresent (but sadly not benevolent) Apple, no one else seemed to be selling mp3 players. They all had handwritten signs saying "we only sell to distributors". They clearly weren't up for the "open to the public day".

I'm still looking...

hey Cervantes, yes, most stands at simo do not sell there but you can go to their stores now that simo is over.

a lot of them let you place an order with their special "simo price" and then get the product at one of their stores later.

since you recommended i buy from (or look into it) a uk shop, i would recommend you but from a u.s.a. webshop that ships to spain as the u.s. electronic prices can'r be beat and many mp3 players are rated for world voltage. so, as you told me, you would only have to get a plug adapter.
