________________________________________ The Madrid, Espana Spanish Language Meetup needs 2 more confirmations in the next 48 hours!
As you may know, Meetups are cancelled if less than 5 people confirm that they'll be there. (That's to help ensure a good experience.)
Currently, your Meetup has only 3 confirmations. IT'S NOT TOO LATE to help spread the word! Maybe tell people, email people, call people, and/or post to a website! ================================================================
Hey Adrian and all, I just went to sign up and try to save the meetup but got this message on the Madrid meetup page...
quote:
Not enough Spanish Students & Teachers near Madrid, Espana can make it, so this month's Meetup is cancelled. Join this topic by filling in the info below and we'll sign you up for next month.
So, looks like it has been cancelled for tonight
Hard to believe they could not get even 5 peeps to commit to this And there are 36 members curently signed up for the Spanish Language meetups according to the MAIN MADRID MEETUP PAGE
I also looked through quite a few other groups and most other meetups seem to have been cancelled as well
I will sign up for next month's meetup anyway to see what it is all about.
Stephen, basic membership is currently free. Read section 2.3 of their TERMS & CONDITIONS but when you sign up, at the end of the process, they offer a plus membership ("Meetup+") for $$$. You need not take them, just sign up for the basic free membership if you prefer.
I do not know about the levels of Spanish people have. Guess you should expect a mixed bag.
Adrian, let's plan on going next month! Anyone else who wants to join us, feel free to sign up.
OK, next month is here already, so the Spanish meetup will be happening again IF enough people sign. Surely mm people alone could "make it happen!" I think maybe Stephen and Jer and I will go? So two more and voila! Chica, I see you signed up.
The links are higher up in this thread for all interested. The meetup idea covers heaps (that was for Tev) of other things too though. Here are all the topics with Madrid possibilities Plenty of geeky stuff (inc WiFi Jer) but some expat stuff too.
Jer - or any other savvy mmers - I think the problem with these things may be that the local Spaniards have no clue they exist - and so people think they won't have anyone to speak Spanish with, just other non-natives. So if people can think of good places to post about the meetup thing's existence so a Spanish audience will see it, maybe they could? I don't yet know where the web-savvy Madrilenos hang out online?

Did I read correctly, tonight's topic is Russel Crowe??? I mean the guy is cute, but maybe it's better I am in San Diego, they can't hear me laughing from here.

Ive given my English students a few listings (web and other) so they can follow up their English thru the summer (multimadrid being one BTW). I shall suggest this as an extra way for them to meet foreigners. Stephen

Hey all, just wanted to remind everyone that tonight (July 15th, Tuesday) is our Spanish language meetup at Caf Beln at 7:00pm.
Adrian and I (maybe Shawn as well) will be there on time for sure.
Hope to see some of you there!!!
HERE is a MAP of the location of Caf Beln so you all have no excuses not to show up.
Saludos, jer...
p.d. Chica, I see that you joined the meetup but did not say if you are coming tonight or not Bring Chico with ya and we can finally teach him proper Spanish :jeje:
Hey guys....wed love to join you tonight, but we are IKEA bound after my class at 7:30pm. We are still struggling to get our new flat in living condition not to mention the last bit of obras done on the offices...
Maybe the next one...have a drink for us. When we are finally settled, we will have a decent mini multimadrid gathering at our house...mini because our flat is mini!!
I would join you guys if tonight I don't have to take my brand new Swedish "other" boss and wifey (who can only manage to say hola and "Kgrassias" ) house-hunting like I did last night until 11PM! (at least I get to see beautiful houses with gardens and pools ) But I'm afraid I will have to....

Hey, guess I am the first one back here after our gathering last night.
So, had an AWESOME time with you all (Ena, Adrian, Lena, Serge, Shawn, Ernesto) yesterday
We met at 7:00 as scheduled at Caf Beln and it was a nice place, new to me as I had never even heard of the place.
We finally go to meet Serge (sergeholandes on the board) who is a very cool guy to hang out wit and even invited (yes, it the true Spanish sense of the word "invitar" ) us to a drink at "Autores" (pretty cool bar/club he works at) on Calle Campoamor, thanks Serge!!!
After leaving AUTORES we went to... (pim, you are gonna wish you had just broken the other heel off and met us anyway :jeje: )... TGIF (FRIDAYS).
Yes, not my normal style but Ena had been waiting her whole life to try their "loaded potatoes" (tater skins as we know em in the USA).
She was like a kid in a candy store with all that American style food
We had a good meal and then headed home.
As for the Spanish Language Meetup, not even the folks at Caf Beln (the chosen venue for the Meetup BY the Meetup "organizers") knew that there was to be a Meetup there last night
Of the 7 of us who showed at Caf Beln, 6 of us were from multimadrid. Ernest was the only one who came from the 58+ members of the "Spanish Meetup" website, confirming our suspicions that it is a pretty unorganized and not a very reliable organization
It was great to meet Ernesto and he got to practice his English quite a bit as we conversed in and out of English and Spanish all night.
I was surprised that not even the members of "Spanish Language Meetup" who are on their site as "Hosts" showed
If the mm gang had not gone, Ernesto would have been alone
I gave Ernesto the multlimadrid web address so he can join up here and come to future mm events.
Maybe the Spanish Language Meetup gang will become more active after the summer so I will probably not go to the next one (Tuesday of next month). Maybe we can try again in September.
Oh yeah, if anyone can find a place on the SPANISH MEETUP WEBSITE to post a "Post-Meetup Report" (not photos but rather text), please let me know as I could not find any section like that
