hey ldhall05. not for nothing but the vast majority of those on these forums are americans not the best place to shout out for buddies that do not speak english. - you can only get sucked in if you let yourself. - stay away from the irish pubs! stay away from the foreigners scene. - do some "intercambios" (language exchanges) with spaniards. - git yerself a spanish boy/girlfriend saludos, jer...

it is simply when you arrange to meet a spaniard and you talk half the time in english and half in spanish, helping each other with the language and getting to know each other. see http://www.multimadrid.com/intercambios . best way to find one is looking in/putting a classified ad in local papers or posting a flyer around the university. saludos, jer...

Hola ldhall05, All previous advice is good. I studied (ha ha) with DQ in Salamanca for a month (signed up for 3 weeks, stayed a month ) . The school has a list of intercambios you can call. I don't know how current it is, though. Do keep in mind that intercambios are often used by men trying to "hook up." Not that that is a bad thing. I know someone who's in a long term relationship from an intercambio. Just wanted to give you that heads up. Salamanca is AWESOME but it is definitely a party town if you're not careful. It's easy to get sucked in to the all night partying but you can also choose to avoid all that and hang at the local cafes and restaurants. The people are very friendly. I recommend Tres Hermanos. A local place with patient patrons (always important for the practicing foreigner). Overall, you will have an incredible experience in Salamanca. If you don't, it's your fault not the city's. It has too much to offer to miss out on anything. Well, that's my two bits. ENJOY!! Rebecca PS - hope to see you all soon. Coming back to MAD ont he 5th! See you Multimadriders soon!!!!

jejejej, i guess i am also guilty as charged. i did a bunch of "intercambios" here in madrid when i arrived 9 years ago. i was pretty fluent in spanish but i wanted to meet spaniards (hookin up was just an added BONUS ) and thought it was a good way to go. made a lot of friends and YEP... as many of you know, i married one of my intercambios (aka. "ena" ) last september after being a 7 year long term relationship LONG LIVE INTERCAMBIOS!!! saludos, jer... p.d. Mari2000, welcome to the board!
