Hi all--
How about a picnic in the Retiro for those of us who are here in August? This could be a good chance to indoctrinate some of the youngest multimadrileños... Big kids, little kids, perpetual children, grown-ups, the elderly, newcomers...todos. We could each bring a drink (or lots of drinks, knowing us) and a dish to share.

Retiro
August 10
3pm (ish) (or is earlier better?)

The question is where to do it... There's a nice shady, grassy area on the west side of the Palacio de Cristal, but I'm up for any other suggestions. It's probably going to be hotter than a firecracker, so maybe closer to the metro stop is better (though the 2 line is closed between Opera and Sevilla this summer, isn't it?).

Here's a link to the spot that I was thinking off (let's see if it works...it should be marked with a "B"):

http://www.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=&da...077&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=17

Any takers?

EXCELLENT!!!

ena, lync and i had one yesterday at the retiro with some friends. we were 8 adults and 3 kids and we all had a blast.

so, count us in for sure. we will be between summer vacations that week so we will be there.

3pm is perfect mariposita. let's just all meet at the main entrance at the plaza de la independencia (puerta de alcalá) and then head in and find a spot to plop down together.

yes, the best thing is for everyone to bring their own sandwich or whatever and also make or bring something to share. we will be bringing an "hojaldre pie" to share, it is ena's specialty and is lish yummy

ONE OTHER NOTE. everyone should also bring at least one bag of ice and a cooler is they have one. ice is always a HUGE necessity for cold drinks and will be especially so in august.

as for the where, i have a good spot in mind that is not far from the main entrance and near the metro and the playground for the kiddies. i will post a map here when i get the chance in case there are peeps who do not make the main entrance at 3.

saludos,
jer...

Candice, the great thing about multimadrid is that anyone can propose get togethers but let's not mix this thread up with another possible picnic. if you want to propose one, just start another thread for it and i am sure people will show interest.

good plan! and a good excuse to do some cooking as well. I'll probably bring a pasta salad. Let's see how much interest there is (is 1500 too early for a BBQ? wink)

Cool Coen--I'm sure I'll rustle up some off-board types to come, too and will post a list when I get back from vacation in early August.

Candice--A mid-September gathering would be great, since everyone should be back in town after vacas and we'll have lots of pent-up partying to do. Good luck getting settled in.

hey all.

whew! arrived back in madrid yesterdy after nearly 3 weeks in south and north u.k. and apparently we landed smack in the middle of a mega heatwave, they say it is gonna top out today at 40º nutz

so glad to see so many into the picnic. heatwave is supposed to go till friday so maybe we will get a slight break on sunday.

ok, as i do not know for sure that the picnic spot i have in mind will be big enough for all of us or will even be available, i am not going to post a map. let's just meet at 3pm at the main entrance (plaza de la independencia, puerta de alcalá) and find a place together.

for those who may arrive late, take my cell phone number with you and call and i will tell you where we are. the number is 656266844.

IMPORTANT as i stated earlier "everyone should also bring at least one bag of ice and a cooler if they have one. ice is always a HUGE necessity for cold drinks and will be especially so in august."

it is my experience at these types of gatherings that most people do not end up bringing ice so i am gonna change this to a "BYOI&D" picnic. Bring Your Own Ice & Drinks since it may be a scorcher and i for one cannot live without cold drinks.

so, to recap, everyone should bring their own sandwich or other lunch and drinks and ice if they want to have any ( this is code for "jer is not sharing his ice with anyone nah nah )

each person should also make (or buy) something to share with the rest.

saludos,
jer...

Got it jer--so basically you're taking care of the ice, then... (just kidding). I agree that hydration is the key. Under the trees it's almost bearable in the Retiro... better than our piso, at least.

It looks like the red/2 line has opened back up (at least according to the Metro site). The 1 line is closed between Atocha and Tribunal (just in case anyone one was planning on coming that way).

We're going to bring an assortment of olives, ham, cheese, melon, and gazpacho (with cups) to share. No way the oven is getting turned on in our place until September...

besos,

Megan
