Yeah yeah... go on, laugh at me... However I did hear some crazy stories about people having to return to US and actually spend months living here in order to keep... uhmmm... something... Maybe it only pertains to people on social security, or rather receiving pension in US? And if that's just a load bs (hopefully!) then what else are you required to do? Do you file your taxes with uncle Sam? How does that work? Not that I'm terribly concerned about these things but I just want to get an idea ahead of time.

Queensita. since they are americans, they can be here for 90 days without any special permissions. they can simply be tourists. as long as they get travel insurance for those months each year they are here, i see no probs. saludos, jer...

I think anyone plans on retiring from the USA to Spain has a long, complicated road ahead, no matter how bright and shiny the goal may be.
Getting a resident visa is a long process that sometimes requires back-and-forth from Spain to the USA. Getting the required retirement funds into Spain without paying tax twice is almost impossible. Before you buy a home you have to establish residency, have health insurance, prove you have plenty of money in a SPANISH account already, and have all the pertinent documents translated into Spanish by a Special Certified (expensive) Translator. All these things must be done in the proper order, and after three years of research I've never found them laid out in a clear-cut, ABC order. (there's a niche market here for an enterprising someone!) ..And then there's the move itself! Egad!
Still, anything really worthwhile is worth a struggle; I have the good fortune of being married to a UK national which makes the process somewhat less impossible, if not a bit more complicated.
And we're going to do this, god willing and the Euro don't rise.
