Sorry - not really sure where to start with this. I have searched the forums and web at large and am more confused than ever.
Briefly: I am of EU nationality, resident here and I had my wallet stolen with my Foreigners Identity Card (not sure how to refer to it now). I want to get it replaced, but am I right in thinking this no longer exists and is now a Foreigners Certificate? What is this anyway? Do I really need one? Is it just a piece of paper and not a card? I have filed the police report and went to my local Ayuntamiento and have been directed to go to Ministerio del Interior. Oficina de Extranjeros de Madrid. Plaza del Campillo del Mundo Nuevo, 3.
Can anyone who has been there or been through this give me advice?
Thanks

You are correct, Spain does not give out Foreigner Identity Cards, just a piece of paper with your NIE number.

When I went to do my foreigner card, the lady told me that I do not need it because I am an EU resident.

Do what you want to do...... don't preach!

Thats what I was debating for the longest time... I have a NIE and I was under the impression that I need this Certificado. But once I found out that its just another piece of paper, and not actually an ID card, I decided against going through the whole ordeal. At this point I really don´t see what I would need it for... I did everything I needed to with NIE: got a job, bought an apartment, got a contract for the mobile phone... So why waste time, stand in lines and pay silly fees?

I dunno, I'm asked quite often for my card. I'm wondering if they will accept it once it's expired (next month!)

Cheers,

Juliette

Exactly. This is worrying. You could carry your passport, everyone (begrudgingly) accepts that, but who wants to do that?

We're not EU, but for what it's worth we only carry around our expired cards (the new ones are just to precious to risk losing!). I've never had a problem using them to make purchases and that sort of thing. If I were traveling, I would obviously take my passport and valid card. Of course just a passport is sufficient if you are EU.

I, for one don´t carry around my EU passport but my Polish ID and it works for making purchases with cards and in most banks.
