Wow! What a great message thread! I feel like moving to Spain just reading it.....AND I ALREADY LIVE HERE!!

As I commented to Maya previously, I have been working as a Software and Telecom consultant for the last two years with a consulting firm and I wouldn't mind having somebody to speak English with nearby, so should anybody want me to forward their CV (resume for the gringos) to one or two HR departments that I have contact with, I'd be happy to do what I can to help.

There is still some work out there in spite of the current situation in the market. If you have an IT related degree and/or demonstrative experience in a software and/or telecom related field, send me a private reply and I'll give you my email address.

They love native English speakers in these fields here in Madrid. If you have a respectable level of Spanish, that helps as well, but it's not going to make or break you.

Best of luck to all! Smiler

Surely, IT isn't the only industry in Spain that is hurting for workers. How is the healthcare industry (being the nurse, that I am)?

Hmmmmmm... I am an IT guy but self trained and proclaimed, is that good enough?

Sorry ToniG, as far as the nursing filed goes, there is more of an exodus form Spain than anything else Frowner

A few months ago it was all over the news, qualified nurses and doctors leaving Spain to take jobs in Britain, Sweden, etc... due to the lack of opportunity here.

Loads of info online about this if you read Spanish and know where to look. Try doing a search in www.google.com on "enfermeras salen de Espaa" ("nurses leave Spain") and you will see.

Saludos,
jer...

Hey ToniG, don't laugh, that is actually a great idea. Specialized English language training is the way to go here. Many individuals and/or companies now specialize in specific areas when it comes to teaching English, ie. Legal, Business, Tech, and hey... why not medical Smiler

I know a British guy who just began a project called "Brand New English" (www.brandnewenglish.com) and is doing pretty well marketing and selling the program to existing schools and companies here. It is based on the teaching of English for business and new technologies.

You may be on to something there, if you want to contact him, just go to www.brandnewenglish.com and drop him a mail from the contact area. His name is Matt Luce and he is a cool guy. Maybe he would be interested in adding a medical English teacher to his team.

Tonitorero,

OK! How do i send my CV to you. I have a telco background which should interest you. I have also taken courses in 8 different programing and non programing IT courses like Java, Windows NT,etc. How do i send my CV to you? I live in Madrid and would prefer to move that information technology way. Like i said in my earlier post being legal is the best route. Dont you think with this it would be much easier to make it with the consultancy firm you work?

Telecoms and IT is what you need, well i have that experience.

Hope to hear from you.

Hey BAS!

Sorry for the delay....I've been busy. Jer was kind enough to forward me your CV. I promise you that it will go out tomorrow!

I think that the difference between being a consultant or a 'propio' depends on your mobility and to a lesser extent what you're looking for in your career.

The advantages to being a consultant are that it has been paying (until now) MUCH more than being a permanent employee (propio) for a corporation. I've seen situations where propios earn 3-4 million pesetas a year where some long time consultants can conceivably earn upwards of 8-10 million a year. Why do company's hire consultants instead of propios?

Well, there's your disadvantage. THEY CAN GET RID OF YOU WHENEVER THEY WANT TO WITHOUT HAVING TO INDEMNIFY YOU! Since you still remain with a consulting firm, your company must still find you a project to work on, but the projects you work on can end abruptly with little or no notice. I'm coming to the end of a cumfy 2 year project right now that I really liked so I'm a bit bummed about that aspect of the business to be honest with you. Frowner

If you don't mind moving around occasionally, consulting's not a bad route. Though, it does tend to go against the way company's have worked in Spain traditionally. To be honest with you, though I wasn't born here, you do get used to that comfort and stability when you're on a great project and it certainly isn't fun when it ends, but that's the price you pay I guess. Oh well, I guess it should cheer me up when I compare my bank book with that of the 'propios''. Wink

Best of luck buddy! I'm certainly not a headhunter or powerful IT broker of any sort, but I'm more than happy to help out any other people who are currently in the same boat I was in 3 short years ago, barely speaking the language and looking for work. It can be hard at times. Stick in there!!

Toni!

Thank you very much for the assistance. I really appreciate it. Of course my thanks to our friend Jer who is always around to give any assistance to anyone who need it. That is why this is the best site regarding Madrid and Spain as a whole.

Best of Luck!

I just started a new topic called "Landing a job in Spain" which was intended as a reply to this thread, but since it was my first-ever post on this site, I wasn't sure what each each button was for. Anyway, it has my own experience as a "qualified IT proffesional" (albeit foreigner) during 8 months in Madrid this year, in case anyone's interested...

BAS... a little while back you and Jer were discussing how people say they want to move to Spain but don't have the patience or are just too proud to take whatever job they have to to make it happen... i'm willing!!!
i REALLY want to move to Spain next September or October (i'm stuck in a lease in CT until August) and i want to do it legally (get a job FIRST)... i've sent out about a dozen e-mails w/ my resume in response to job postings on this site, INMadrid, madridman.com, the expatriate cafe and Monster... but i never get a 'real' response back! i've already begun the research, i've been to Spain twice before so i'm familiar/comfortable w/ being there, and i'm going to be in Madrid for a week in January to do 'hands-on' research... but i feel like the work i've done so far isn't bringing anything back to me. Like Jer said a while back, unless i work for a company here in the states for a good long while, they're not going to transfer me to Spain, and unfortunately i'm not marketable enough to think that i can land a job w/ a multinational where they're going to want to ship me off to Madrid immediately... so...
i just graduated in May w/ a double major in Management and Spanish education. I've got sales experience and some basic teaching experience. I don't care WHAT i'm doing work-wise as long as i'm doing it in Madrid... can you offer me any more 'specific' advice?!?! thanks soooo much if you can!!!
