Envy, envy, envy! I am already retired, but can't plan to move to Spain unless there were some way to drag my extended family along! At best, saving for two weeks here and there, and dragging one or two at a time...

Hello Folks, This has got to be my favorite thread. As I rumble into my retirement lane (7 short years to go) I too have looked at Spain and decided it is for me. First because my roots are there and second because like you said, Spain is so friendly and an easy country to travel. I do have a question, what kind of retirement income does one need to have to live well in Espa�a? Does one need more say if you want to live on a town like Estepona in Southern Spain or in a town like Salamanca? Does anyone know?

Well, Booklady, I am going to reveal the pension on which Jer says I could live like a queen: together, my husband and I collect $3000 per month(more when social security kicks in)

For residence I would choose:Calpe(Alicante), Altea (Alicante), Costa del Sol(Mijas,Estepona, Fuengirola) ; Mallorca ; Torredembarra(Tarragona)or Madrid. All are sunny places and blue sky.

Sue, thank you for your candidness. My husband and I will be in the same range. Social won't kick in until five years after I retire,if it's there still! I'll be 62 then, and too old to go gallivanteing, plus I hope I'll have grandchildren then . In the meantime, after I retire, I'd like to live in Spain part of the year, from four to six months. Lease an apartment or house and see all those lovely places that Jer talks about all the time!

The "part of the year" part sounds great. I don't think I could manage more than a month away from the grandkids(in fact, when I spent most of September in San Sebastian, I really missed them. Having my husband along instead of being alone with a bunch of rich and crabby American tourists might improve that aspect) However, my husband, so far, isn't all that crazy about this idea, since he doesn't speak Spanish.

Booklady... I would quite seriously suggest that you look into the possibility of buying 'una casita en la playa.' They are not at all expensive from what I generally see in real estate offices and new real estate developments. What I would recommend would be, the next time you visit Spain, to go visit some of the typical summer regions (Valencia, Levante, Almeria, Costa de Sol, Cadiz, etc.) and check out prices. Renting and leasing for 4-6 months per year is not cost effective in my opinion. However, if you own your own place, you can rent it out for the 6-8 months that your not there (very popular at the moment) and receive a return on your investment. My wife and I can't afford to do it at the moment, but I'd love to work to a point to where we can do this in the future. Just some food for thought. I�m just back from a week in Andalucia looking for a small house to buy for my retirement!!! Had as good a look round as was possible in a week and the prices are really quite reasonable (I think!!), though unfortunately too high for my budget. Inland from Malaga towards Coin and Alora was reasonable, though not so pretty. Inland from Velez Malaga was lovely but the access to the villages was very difficult!! However, I saw some lovely village houses all under 15 million pesetas in reasonable condition. I have also looked around Calpe, Denia etc which was rather more expensive.

.. they are never going to sell those houses. Who on the earth can get their hands on pesetas these days  Think they would take Euros? In all seriousness, tony is right, buy and rent out when you are not here rather than renting for part of the year and having nothing to show for it after all is said and done. We (actually it is Ena's but I like to think of us as one ) has a place in Murcia and when the witch who lives in it kicks off (long story) and it becoems 100% property of Ena, we plan to rent it out. Jer, I was surprised too - the residents of the Andalucian villages seem to have completely ignored the euro, and everything was still priced in pesetas!!! Nice for me who still cannot get her head around the euro!!!!
