Far off in sunlit places, Sad are the Scottish faces, Yearning to feel the Kiss Of sweet Scottish rain"

OK, we've made the decision to move across next Spring. I'd love to teach English and have done a course, but I'm looking at all options and as I'm a production journalist, it makes sense to see if I could get a job doing that. Whenever I try to find English-speaking newspapers(magazines, journals etc) I end up getting onto the costas, which isn't what I want at all. Can anybody help with a list of what's available in Madrid.

I always dreamed of working on an English language magazine as a freelance journalist in Spain. It was the be all and end all of my goals for the longest time, until that fateful moment when I learned how much it paid...nada.
Yay, Liz! Another wee Scottie soon to swell the ranks!! Woohoo! So glad you have set a time to make the move. I suspect the English-teaching thing will need to be that stepping-stone, in the light of what Jer mentions above, but also because the Spanish are very big on getting to know you (oh-so-tentatively) first. I imagine that making contacts here, having proved your intentions, will be how you get a foot in the door. I'm sure we've talked about Spain View before, but just in case we haven't, there you go.
I tried to get that red panda by the way, but he kept hiding ...
By the way, let me know your August dates more precisely, because I'm heading back to the motherland for a bit soon.

Thanks you two. Bizarrely, I'm in an internet cafe in Edinburgh listening to a man haggle with the owner in SPANISH!!!!!
And the stupid thing is - I feel homesick cos I'm hearing it
The articles are scary. But then everything about this move is freaking me out. But then I know it's the right thing to do. But then I worry . . . I suppose everyone has been through this and all you can do is try. A life lived in fear is a life half-lived (as they say in Strictly Ballroom). I'm a production journalist rather than a "writing" one so I design pages and see the finished product through from words from the reporter to ready to go to the press (and yes, I once told them to hold the front page and - all you brits will like this - drop the dead dolphin . . .) But I've always wanted to teach, just my life didn't work out that way through a variety of reasons. But now, perhaps it will.
Anyway, what my long ramble really wants to say is thanks to Jer for this site as I know when we do move across we'll have a host of people waiting to help.
Adrian, we're in Valencia from Aug 17. If you're in Edinburgh before that, give me a shout. Would love to meet up. Otherwise, first week in December - Madrid here we come . . .

Hey Elizabeth, pretty funny that Spanish convo at the internet caf.
Well, I think Adrian is heading up to Edinburgh for the first 3 weeks of August, do I feel an Edinburgh multimadrid mini get-together coming on
The problem with working for those English lang. newspspers is that the only jobs they offer on a regular basis that pay anything are the sales positions (selling advertisements in the papers/mags).
If sales is one's "fuerte", it can be good.
The photogrpher/writer positions are usually taken up by budding photographers/writers who do the work simply to get published or for 30 per article.
Also, the fact that many ex-pats do not want to teach English here creates a huge amount of would-be writers for the English lang. papers/mags.
Hey Elizabeth, you might take a look at rapid tree.com and find the link to western europe and then go to the spain link and there are a VERY large number of magazines and newspapers and more listed there along with pertinent contact info. as well as description of thier content and even whole mag.'s viewable online. Although it would take a considerable amount of time just to research that many things, it may offer some potential leads to call on, perhaps.

Hi Liz, looking forward to seeing you in the refreshing green-ness of Auld Reekie in August! I came across this listing of English/Spanish magazines/stuff which might contain new info for you? If I see anything else I'll post it on this thread.

An excellent link to know but they seem to be only Spanish language papers there. Some (albeit very few) have English lang. versions like "SUR" but wading through all those to find a few English ones is not worth the time.
The page Adrian mentions lists only the Eng. lang. ones but they are spread all over Spain and you (Elizabeth) opened this thread needing to know of the ones in Madrid as that is where you seem to want to live.
So, let's try to get back to helping Elizabeth with what she needs.
She did write...

If anyone has more to add to the list of Madrid English lang. papers/mags. that I posted above and repeat below...
Hello Liz, So glad to hear your news. Please forgive me if I am "buttin' in" but have you thought of writing about Spain and selling the stories to American Magazines. Writer's Market lists hundreds of magazines that are NOT necessarily travel mags(which have their own stable of steady writers) but magazines which focuses on the retired Elderly and such. Also specialty magazines sometimes pay very well for a short feature.
These magazines have featured travel articles before about France, Ireland, Britain, and Italy but seldom have I seen many articles about Spain.
With this new "friendship" between Bush and Aznar I have noticed that Spain crops up more in the magazines and newspapers.
Anyway, it is just another avenue to explore. I believe that Writer's Market is online...
Best of luck, and you will succeed!

Its free, I think I got it in the Tourist OFfice at C/Duque de Medinaceli. Ads for schools, pictures of embassy garden parties, some travel writing. But much less glossy than The Broadsheet. Stephen

Hi Liz,
I know this is different advice from what others are giving you, but since you are a journalist and can write well, I suggest that you look at the only type of writing that pays well: writing for businesses.
More specifically, copywriting or "sales writing" as they sometimes call it. It consists of writing direct mail letters, sales brochures, press releases, etc.
You can make more money doing this than writing for any newspaper or magazine.
In fact, to help get you started, I'll give you a link of a company in Spain, they are copywriters:
