Hi,
I am an American citizen interested in eventually retiring in Spain, however, I would like to open a bank account there first. Is it possible to open an account there without having a Spanish address? Which banks will give me the least hassle? I plan to travel Wednesday so I really appreciate any help!

Welcome to Spain
I´m almost sure you can open a bank account on their web site.www.bankinter.com

Pls do a search on the board, you´ll find a lot on this subject.

Hi Wild Lee,

I don't believe you need a local address, but it helps if they have to send you stuff (ATM/cash card etc..). When I moved here in '05 I was able to set-up a couple of "no residente" accounts (required unless you have a NIE/Spanish tax identifier) using a UK correspondence address. As Navalee mentions there has been extensive discussions on this topic and I believe references (although I have not read the thread recently) to a particular bank office in Madrid that Jer knows which seem to treat foreigners well.

I have had a reasonable experience with Citibank. For me they are useful since I need to transfer money between Spain and the UK without having to wait or pay for a SWIFT transfer.

regards

grant

Why would you want a spanish bank account if you don't live here?

Non resident accounts are quite common here due to the fact that so many Brits Germans etc own holiday homes here but are not residents.
