Hi mariposita! I know several friends here in Lanzarote who work two part time jobs. They have two contracts, two nominas etc etc and it is perfectly legal and proper. I think there is some adjustment to their tax each year, but not sure what!!! Is that of any help to you?

OK after waiting almost a year I am finally legal. Now I have to make a decsion on whether to continue to teach under the table, teach at an angency with a contract, or become automono and bill the agency and the pay the SS myself. I will be teaching only though agencys. My concern is that in signing a contract with an agency is that if the classes get cancelled I get stuck not getting paid or getting paid and being short hours and having to work the whole summer for free. Tandem does that, they give you a contract for as many hours as you want per month but if your short you have to pay them back at the end of the year. As well if I'm contract I can't work for what ever agency has the work. Currently I work for 5 different agencies. Regarding automano, I understand the SS part but what about income taxes? I won't make much so I expect I'll pay very little. Is it worth being autonomo if you only work for an agency? thanks in advanced

They will be delighted to have you register to be autonomo because you will be paying them €240/month (or something like that) for the privilege. I had similar worries and it was a piece of cake and no questions were asked. Go to Ventanilla Unica (www.vue.es) and you can do it all in one place and on one day. Cheers, Juliette

that is really the difference between America and Europe. In America (and Canada) you start a business by hanging your shingle out the window and worry about taxes latter. In Europe you must do all the red tape first and worry about making money latter. That is the very reason why no one here has started a Fortune 500 company is 50 years or more.

Hi Juliette, Maybe you will be able to help me this this query. I have been teaching English in Madrid as an autonomo for over two years but now the academy where I am working tells me the spanish law has changed and the classes I am doing must be paid under a contract. I thought that was okay when I read the conditions of the contract as the lower rate meant they paid my social security. However, I have now found out that should I do any hours for this academy in a different location, I still need to be registered as an autonomo and pay the 256 euros social security or they will withhold my payment. So, I now have to restart my autonomo social security but may only earn an extra 350 euros or so as an autonomo apart from my contract but that will mean I am paying double social security and doesn't seem to make sense. Is this correct? quote: Originally posted by Juliette67: They will be delighted to have you register to be autonomo because you will be paying them €240/month (or something like that) for the privilege. I work for several different agencies all on contract without a problem. I'm also with a an agency that only deducts the 15% but no SS. I'll see what happens, if I'm forced to go autonomo I'll quit, I had enough of Spanish bureaucracy to last me a lifetime.
