I'm a hospitalist general internist in California. Does anyone know about working as a physician in Spain? Is there work? What is the process like?

Hi Karin66,

I'm a bit confused by your job description....does this mean that you have already finished medical school and will soon be a physician, or is that still in the distant future?

First of all, if you're from the EU it will be much easier to find work, no matter what field you are in.

However, there is always a need for talented physicians (in every country), so I think that you might have an easier time getting a work visa than most other people

this is a complicated issue and before answering I would need to know some more information from you, such as where you are from and if you are already a physician

do you mean as a physician inside an hospital or outside?
Anyway, it's very difficult. For public hospitals you have to make an exam with lot of people for a few places, I don't know about private hospitals.
I studied Physics and me and almost of my friends are working as IT.
The few people I know that can go on investigating is after a long process inside university, working a lot and having low money and with a big insecurity in future or what will happen next year, because they don't have a working contract, it's a kind of scholarship that must be renoved every year. The situation of Science in Spain has never been brilliant but now is even worse.
There is a Colegio de Fsicos, it's a kind of organization that try to help Physicians after you graduate, if you want to have a look, it doesn't look very useful, http://www.cofis.es/
What you will always be able to do is to teach to students who aren't good at high school with Physics, they're a lot, but I don't think it's what you mean when you talk about working as a Physician.
Maybe there are also some private companies were you could try to find a job, I know a few people who work as physicians, one in a nuclear firm, other in the CSIC(public),...
