Just wondered if anyone knew of any banks where the clerks speak English? I'm a little razzed off with my Branch of La Caixa as my charges can range from 2 to 20 depending on who serves me! YES I KNOW that I should be able to speak Spanish, but as I send money to the UK every month, I feel I'm being ripped off all the time. Razzer
Somewhere central would be great, near Atocha even better! Cheers

It is likely that any clerk aged under 30 can understand English, if spoken slowly, and I hope it is the same for you the other way...

Then, tell them that you are fed up of rip-off commissions charge in intra-EU wire transfers, that that's illegal, and that you want a claim form for the "Defensor del Cliente" ("Ombudsman") of that bank, just to begin with, and that if you are not given back all the commissions unduly charged to your account, you will get in touch with the AUSBANC ("Asociacin de Usuarios de Banca", a quite strong bank users' association) to defend your rights and to make sure they don't keep doing illegal charges to your account.

"rip-off commissions charge in intra-EU wire transfers"

I'm a native speaker and I don't even understand this!

The most useful thing I found is to be ripped off and then complain to your friends about it while not actually doing anything about it.

This means that you are paying a small fee to feel wronged by the world and thus enabling you to hold a grudge against the locals and have lengthy ex-pat discussions about how it's not like home!

hi manchesterpaul, go to the caixa branch on calle arena n 24 (between puerta del sol and plaza de isabel II) on the north side of the street closer to plaza isable II (metro opera).

this is my home branch and there is a guy that works there named ramn. he speaks decent english but be patient as he can get nervious when speaking.

i think that christina (another employee there) also does a bit of english.

they are all very nice and helpful. they will explain all the commissions and charges to you if you ask.

i am around there most mornings 11:00am(ish)mon.-fri. doing banking deeds so feel free to call me on 656266844 (my cell) if you want me to go in with you and help ya out.

tip: no matter who you are and where you bank, get to know the employees of your home branch (or the one where you go most often). the branch is allowed to use their discretion to charge you less commissions than what is "on the books". i have a great relationship with mine and they cut me breaks VERY often on transfers sent and received, etc...

saludos,
jer...

"rip-off commissions charge in intra-EU wire transfers"

Sorry, there is a small mistake, it should say:

"rip-off commissions charged in intra-EU wire transfers"

I am sorry if it can not be yet understood, but this is now good banking English ;-) even if I am not a native speaker :-D

And I would claim... Banks are abusing of the good-faith of clients all over the EU: you stated the IBAN of the destination account when you did the transfer? If so, you have to be charged at local rates,... but they don't earn that much that way!

Another thing that works - it was suggested to me by a friend and I have tried it too - is ARGUE!

I was told I needed my actual DNI card to open up a 'native' person account, even though I had official confirmation of my number and my passport with me I said I don't have to, she said I did, I said I don't have to, she said I did, I said I don't have to, she said I did, I said I don't have to, she said I did, I said I don't have to, she said I did, I said I don't have to, she said, JODER, VALE! And gave me my account! Red Face

Another time, I was trying to cash a cheque, again without my DNI card, although this time without my passport either, but I did have my EU driving licence, she said I couldn't cash the cheque, I said I could, she said I couldn't, I said I could, she said I couldn't, I said I could, she said I couldn't, I said I could, she said I couldn't, I said JODER! she said "Somos muy pesados aqui en espaa", and I left. So it doesn't ALWAYS work.

That's because there you had enough documents for opening the account, though they did not want to do the effort, while for cashing the cheque, they are compelled legally to ask for a positive identification (passport, DNI or Spanish driving licence), when the cheque is over a certain amount.

My understanding is that the best solution is befriending the bank staff, just like Jer said.
My friend in Malaga, goes to dinner with his bank's manager every couple of weeks or so... no commission charges anymore! Wink

My driving licence is European, it has a very pretty European flag on it, and it should be recognised throughout Europe. Therefore it should be just as accepted as a Spanish one.

I know a joke about befriending a bank manager, but its too rude to tell here...

I went back to my 'favourite' bank yesterday. The person at the counter wasn't the usual woman (although she was there too) but who I believe to be the bald newsreader from Telemadrid (local TV stations obviously don't pay that well in Madrid).

I handed over my cheque to be cashed, and the man looked at it and said "How much do you want". I was a little puzzled. I said, "erm, all of it". He said "You can't. The cheque is badly written." I frowned. He showed me the front.

in numbers "270.70"
in words "dos cientos setenta - " (no "setenta centimos")

I was confused. Is he really saying that I can't cash this cheque because my boss forgot to put the 70c on the end? What I am trying to do, STEAL 70 cents from my boss?!!?!?!?!

I said "Erm... ok, can I have the lower amount?"

"Yes" he said.

Man, I hate that bank.

well, if we look at a large corporation that employs thousands of people, if each employee steals 70 cents, the money can really add up Red Face

I only go there to cash cheques. It isn't my bank, it's the nearest Banco Sabadell to my flat.

Yes, if we ALL tried to steal 70c, that would be a lot, but we aren't ALL trying to do it, and there i no reason why *I* would want to. And anyway, I would be stealing from my EMPLOYER not from the bank itself.
