Hey madsue, not to get too far off the residency issue but you wrote... quote: yup youre right, you need a NIF number to open a residents, or a non residents bank account come to that!!!
There is a bit of controversy over this. See the thread SPANISH BANK ACCOUNTS. Joy (yay, she has arrived!!!) opened a non-residents account yesterday with only her passport Saludos, jer...

No reply as yet from the Consulate on my queries regarding renewing our residencias (what a surprise). Earlier I posted that here in the Canaries we get 30% discount on travel to the mainland (and all other Spanish territories actually). Yesterday a friend tried to travel to Fuerteventura by ferry. His residencia is out of date, but his driving licence isnt. The ferry companies would not allow him the discount and when he explained that he no longer needed a residencia, by law as from 1st March, they were having none of it. Okay, its not much difference on a tiny ferry crossing, but a 30% discount on a flight, say, to Argentina, makes a lot of difference!!! And, we also get that discount if we wish to visit San Antonio in Texas, as that was founded by people from Lanzarote (not a lot of people know that!!!!)

Madsue, I'm "canario", are you sure the 30% discount applies to all flights, even international? Does it also apply to incoming flights (let's say NY-Madrid-Canarias) TIA kike
I'll make you an offer you won't refuse

Kike, I dont believe so, you have to take a copy of your residencia plus a certificado de empadromiento along to the travel agents when you book your ticket to get the discount. At least you did, now they only require a copy of your residencia. But..... if the residencia is out of date........ and you cant get a new one.........

A "sort of" update on this. The Canaries, as Im sure you are aware, are waaaaaaaaay behind the peninsula in all matters legal!!! I have been told by the Consulate in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that any UK citizen who requests a new residencia will be granted one, well, they will if they fit the criteria!! It is not necessary now to have residencia, but if anyone does want one they will not be refused. This is good news, as we will still get our travel discounts, not have the 5% tax withheld on house sales etc etc. Just realised that this info will not be of much use to very many people!! But Ill post it anyway!!!

Kike- you wouldn't get an additional discount from NY to spain to end up in the canaries...You'd have to get someone from the canaries to purchase the ticket for you from Penninsula to the islands- (ticketed seperately from your US/Spain ticket)as any travel agent/airline will not recognize the special discount the island residents get within Spain. The people who are residents (spaniards included, not just foreigners living there) of the Spanish islands (canarias, baleares etc) all get discounts on tickets to the Penninsula- now, if the foreign nationals get an ADDITIONAL discount to that, I don't know. But that's just within Spain.

On the subject of Brirish citizens settling in the Canary Islands, I noticed that there is a 22 page 'pdf' document on the UK Embassy (Madrid) website which may provide some good general answers. Not sure if all of the points also apply to the mainland. I wonder ! http://media.ukinspain.com/documents/pdfs/ServConsulares/settling_palmas.pdf When I opened a NON Resident bank account, it was quite simple. Just a passport and a Deposit. A form that I had to sign along with passport photos declaring that I was a Non Resident came from the bank later on. But maybe that should have been completed at the same time?!? Still confused though :lo: Nige

Although ostensibly he doesn't need it (I assume you mean the tarjeta de residencia), I found I needed it to get me all squared away. It wasn't a problem for him to get his, so I'm assuming it wouldn't be for your husband, either. We had to bring his tarjeta and passport back to the states to pick up my visa from the Embassy. I'm not sure if it can be done without it. It's a handy card to have, even though they say it isn't required. For example, if you travel outside of Spain, you'll have to go to the office of immigration beforehand each time to get a permission to return form. With the card, you don't need that. Stuff like that.
