Hi people! I have a question on empadronamiento. Here is the deal: I am empadronado in the piso I lived in last year in Opera. My roommate at that time was still empadronada en London, so I think I was the only one empadronada in that house.

I have now moved down the street on the Calle Mayor (but still empadronada in the old place). My old roommate sent me an email with this:

"Para yo poder empadronarme aqui en mi casa, necesitaria que te dieras de alta en tu nueva casa, y directamente desaparecerias de esta, sino tendre que cursar una especie de denuncia y la policia tiene que venir a investigar si es real o no que tu vives aqui..."

Does this make any sense? She makes it sound like two people can't be empadronadas in the same houe. Or is it really such a problem for me to still be empadronada there even though I don't live there? Could this really prevent her from empadron-ating? Like the police are really going to come investigate...

Anyway, does anyone have a similar experienece? It's seems strange, but I don't know why she'd go to the trouble of this lio if it wasn't true...

Thanks all in advance for the tips.
Rebecca

i seriously doubt the police would do anything at all.

as far as I know, there is some sort of preventions put in place to ensure that various people cannot empadronar at the same place. i know when i tried to empadronar at my current house, i had to get a copy of my landlord's DNI and a fill out a special form saying that I lived there as his tenant.

in your case, you were never the landlord, so i don't see why one tenant's empadronamieto affects another. but does anyone at all really understand the empadronamiento rules? especially if she went to the plaza mayor office which seems to be staffed by sub-humans.

either way, the email sounds as if your ex-roomie is a bit of a bitch, so maybe to make your life easier, you should jsut go ahead and change your empadronamiento. you do not have to go to plaza mayor and i'd advise against it since it is always a zoo. i always go to C.Velazquez 52 for all my empadro. docs. it is clean, well-organized, and even has ample seating for waiting--though I've never waited more than 10 minutes for anything there.

good luck

got the change of address done. just thought i'd write about what/how it was done. i made an appointment online (i highly recommend the Oficina de Atencion al Ciudadano in barrio Salamanca. It was super clean and hardly anyone there). i went with the documents they said online (DNI, housing contract) and got a number to wait. filled in the form which i picked up there while waiting. only had to wait about 10 minutes, and the lady at the window was helpful and quick (if not super friendly). walked out 5 mins later with the volante for my new empadronamiento!

easy as pie.
