Hello.

If you are in Madrid for Christmas you can't lose one of the tipicalest events.

Cortilandia!

But, what and where is Cortilandia?. It's at the outer wall of the El Corte Ingls that stands on the Preciados street.
More exactly, the wall is in the back street (Maestro Victoria).

They build a lot of huge puppets from the ground to the roof of the El Corte Ingls and, from 18:00 until 22:00 (I think), at every sharp hour, the puppets perform a function, singing and talking during 10 minutes.

Every inhabitant of Madrid goes there with their childrens on Christmas time. It's a tradition.

This year, the puppets are masquerade as the "Master of Rings".

Bye.

Hey totx, thanks for that one.

You beat me too it, I just got in from the UK vising my brother (he married a Brit) and while I have loads of posts to catch up on, I just had to comment on this one before I go to bed.

"Cortylandia" is absolutely mad during the holidays, if you are in a hurry and need to get from the Puerta del Sol area to the Callao area, do not take that street where cortylandia is.

As totx has stated, this is a very popular trtadition but unfortuantely it has become very commercial and now "advertises" more than it entertains. A perfect example is this years set up of "Lord of the Rings" (totx, that is the correct name in English) to boost movie ticket and merchandising sales.

It is still however a pretty wild phenomenon and nice to see, especially if you have kids with you in Madrid.

Saludos,
jer...

p.d. as usual, I will be posting some photos of "Cortylandia" on this thread soon Big Grin

Actually pretty bad this year and as I said, VERY commercial.

Now that I have had a good look at it, I advise you all to skip it this year. Seems more like "cutrelandia" every year (for those who do not know, "cutre" means "tacky" or "corny") and it has becoem popular amongs Madrileos to call it "cutrelandia" instead of "cortylandia".

Hi all

I agree with you Jer. It looks very boring this year.

I can remember vividly the first time that I saw this display (November 1999) and was totally mesmerised by the entire display, and the reaction to it by the children in the crowd, as well as those who are not children anymore, well, at least not in age anyway. As it was my last night in Madrid, and Europe, before leaving to return to Australia, I had unfortunately ran out of film so I didn't have my camera with me, and the mighty El Cortes Ingles didn't have any disposable cameras left, so I only have memories of the display in my mind.

Seeing this display, as well as the Christmas Lights in Madrid, is one of the criteria's for my planning of my Wife, and my next trip to Spain, so I can only hope that they return to their original style of displays, rather than a blatant commercial marketing excercise.

Ooh, I had almost forgotten about Cortilandia!!! When I was in Leon, they had a really cool Egyptian theme there. I think Madrid had a circus theme, if I remember correctly. Very fun!

Hey, I've got one! Hope this works...
brews
P.S. On the second floor of El Corte, there is an exposition with miniatures of all the Cortylandias since their inception in 1979. It's pretty neat.

That looks cool and it's a wonderful shot. I will be seeing this live for myself next year. I really enjoy the community effort of people pitching in and helping others out.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL,

Shawn
