Hi space monkey, just got around to this one, been a bit busy.

Welcome to our little family here online.

There is a thread entitled "Carnaval in the Plaza Mayor?" HERE, have a look.

Also, get your appetitie up by checking out my Carnaval Madrid footage HERE Cool

Carnaval this year is Feb. 28 - March 5 (Fri.-Wed.), the inauguration being on that Friday, Feb. 28th and the ending "Entierro de la Sardina" (Burrial of the Sardine) being on Wednesday, March 5th.

At that THREAD FROM LAST YEAR'S CARNAVAL you can see the schedule of events but the exact one for this year has not been released yet. I will put it up as soon as I get my hands on it Smiler

By looking at last year's schedule howeever, one can pretty much get an idea of what will go on this year and when it will all happen (the musical acts will change but not much else).

For example, the huge parade and 1st concert will be Saturday afternoon/evening March 1st. Again, see THIS THREAD for details.

While many districts and suburbs here have their own little parades, concerts and Carnaval celebrations, the focal point of Carnaval in Madrid is, without a doubt, the Plaza Mayor. You would do well to hang out around here during that week if ya can't get to the Canary Islands or Cdiz Wink

Also, if anyone has kiddies here, the Sunday of Carnaval week sees a "Festival Infantil" (kiddie festival) complete with kiddie costume contest in the Plaza Mayor.

Hope this helps.

Saludos,
jer...

Jer,

I had no idea that I would be in town for CARNAVAL. That makes the trip even better. I also have to take pictures of Madrid proper, since last time I only took pictures of cities outside of Madrid.

Can't wait to see the festivities.

Hi again all, after seeing a few posts on Carnaval this year, I have decided to pop in here (albeit a bit late) and post on the goings on.

Ok, Carnavales in Madrid were inaugurated on this past Friday and that night there was an orchestra concert in the Plaza Mayor. The "ASEREJE KETCHUP GALS" were supposed to play but I am not sure if they did as I missed the concert.

Saturday we saw the Carnaval parade through the city and costume contest in the Plaza Mayor, followed by a concert by singer "AMARAL" (amongst others). The ever so popular MARTA SANCHEZ was supposed to sing but she cancelled due to throat problems.

Today (Sunday) there is a kiddie costume contest in the Plaza Mayor stating at noon and then concerts tonight. Featured band tonight is "REVOLVER".

Not sure what is going on Monday and Tuesday but I will look into it.

Carnaval ends on Wednesday with the "ENTIERRO DE LA SARDINA" (check out my pics)...

1) The "gravedigger" and his tools ready and willing. Eeker

2) The coffin adorned with the poor peseta on the cover. Frowner

... which is a long event that starts arounf 5pm in front of the Hermita de San Antonio de la Florida" on Paseo de la Florida (next to Casa Mingo) at around 5pm (?) and runs into the wee hours with the midnigh(ish) bonfire.

Saludos,
