Hey, has anyone heard of the "Caganer", a character that the Catalans put in their nativity scenes. I'm sure you can guess what the Caganer depicts.

"Me cago en el beln!"

Yes--that's true! I completely forgot about the "caganer. I don't like to make generalize too much, but Catalans joke about their bodily functions more than any culture I've ever run across.

The caganer is kind of off in the corner doing his business, observing the whole scene with a mischevious look.

Caganers? Yup, saw them all over Barcelona last year. Must admit, one aspect of the culture I just don't get.

This character is seen in all the nativity scenes here in Lanzarote too. Apparently it is not a "true" nativity without him, and the children, who up till now I had thought were staring overcome with awe at the beautiful scene, are actually looking for him!!!

I have just come across this web page that seems to give a plausible explanation about the existence of caganers. (plus some other customs for this period).
