Ok, so in my hood (near the Palace and the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza de la Villa), I often run into traveling theater. You know when you walk into a small square with performers in 17th century clothes who perform a short scene to a standing audience who then follows them to another scene elsewhere.
There is one that has been coming into the secret plaza behind my flat (ie: between the apartment complex on the Calle Sacramento and the Ayuntamiento buildings on Sacramento and Rollo) for the past three weeks W-S and I am wondering who and what they are. A group of about 40 people come in at about 21:00, led by two people speaking about the building's history on little head mikes as though they are tour guides. They get halfway through discussing the scurrilous history of the convent that previously stood there, when two actor suddenly rush in and begin a love story in the middle. This goes on for about 15 minutes and then they move on. Does anyone know what this is?

Ok, I figured it out! It's called Visitas Teatralizadas-and they are doing four shows every weekend from now till December: Alatriste, Don Quijote, Leyendas Terribles de Madrid, and a music show. They start in the Plaza Mayor and go through the old part of town. You can get tickets at the tourist office in Mayor.

Hey thanks for posting that, Wendy. Oscar and I were wandering around back there a few weeks ago and saw a couple of the performances of some medieval sort of musical. I definitely want to check out Don Quixote.
Now about that secret plaza behind your building... I saw that they now have it closed off with a gate. Is there any other way to get in?

Well, there are two ways in-either from Calle Sacramento through the actual apartment complex (they seem to mostly leave that gate open) or going down that alley through the town hall buildings off Calle del Rollo. There is a gate there-but I don't think they lock it. There is a new Caja Madrid right through the gate, so, during weekdays it is always open, and, that is where these 40 person tour groups are coming though every Th-Sun evening, and then they go out on Calle Sacramento. Considering they are going to be doing this till December, I doubt that gate is ever locked.
