Hola everyone,
I'm heading to Madrid in June for my fiance's brother's wedding. I think it's going to be pretty traditional, and very fancy (reception at the Ritz). I used to live in Madrid, but never went to any weddings while I was there, so I'm not sure what to wear. My fiance is no help in this department.
I have this very nice black skirt that's sort of flowy but very formal. If I pair it with a different colored top, would it be ok? People keep telling me different things about whether black is acceptable or not. Also, I'm not sure if it's an afternoon or evening wedding.
Sorry for the kind of stupid question! I need to figure it out soon, though.
Thanks.

you might feel very conspicuous in black as spanish women tend to wear very bright colors to weddings. a simple cocktail dress in a solid color, purple, green, pink, blue, would be perfect. shawls are also very popular wedding wear and you can get one here in spain once you arrive (for example el corte ingles carries many colors and styles that you could pair with any dress).

here is a photo of my recent spanish wedding showing some of the españolas in bright dresses.

I agree with Candy regarding bright colors. Stick with jewel tones or coppers/bronze, etc. However, you will never go wrong with a long dress rather than a cocktail length. A cocktail length is acceptable at day weddings in Spain, whereas a long dress works well at both day and evening weddings.

Also, there is great variation between weddings held in large cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, or smaller towns. The larger city weddings tend to be more formal.

Since you are not certain of the time of day, and the fact that it is in Madrid at the Ritz I would recommend going more formal.

Hope that helps!

I went to a posh wedding in Bilbao. No problem wearing black - there were several of us doing it. Jazz it up with a colourful wrap.

not exactly the topic of this post...sorry jer...but i just wanted to say that you make a stunning bride candy!!! beautiful pic.

back to topic, the ladies i've seen in madrid weddings, all had brightly colored long dresses. both were pretty formal weddings, so that may be why there were no cocktail lengths in sight.
