I just returned from a 10 day trip to Spain and I have a question that hopefully someone can answer.

I know that the custom in Spain when greeting or saying goodbye is to give 2 kisses: first on the right cheek and then on the left. But is there any significance of giving just one kiss on the right cheek and then a hug? I saw this a few times in the group I was traveling with and wondered if there was any difference in the meanings. Thanks!

Hey Sharon73, welcome to the group Big Grin

Yes, that single kiss and a hug meant that the person who receives them has the cooties :jeje: Big Grin Wink

Just a welcome joke for ya!!!

Seriously, my Madrilea gal says that if they were men that did the one kis and hug thing, that could explain it but normally hugs here are not too common.

I do not think it meant anything at all, 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Saludos,
jer...

Hey madsue, not to get too off topic here but cooties are like having the "icky-yucky-doody disease Big Grin Jejejeje, I hereby defy any 5 year old to describe them better :jeje: :jeje: :jeje:

Ok, if ya wanna get more technical, I found this post on a forum at www.mezine.net/dearid/archive.php?columnid=17 ...

quote:
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines "cootie" as body louse. And here's how they define body louse: a louse feeding primarily on the body; especially : a sucking louse (Pediculus humanus humanus) feeding on the body and living in the clothing of humans -- called also cootie.

So you might be led to believe that people with cooties have a lousy body, but that's not always the case. Cooties are a syndrome affecting most pre-pubescent boys and girls. They are invisible agents that make each gender think the other is gross, and this is why you see boys on one side of the playground at recess and girls at the other.

Once puberty hits (sometimes much earlier for girls), these very same invisible agents called cooties (Pediculus humanus humanus) turn into love bugs (Ridiculous humanus humanus), a close relative of influenza. Later on in life, the invisible agents evolve even further and cause otherwise rational men to utter inane lines like "What's Your Sign" and "What's a pretty girl like you doing in a place like this." And women are therefore unwittingly accurate when they turn to their girlfriends and mutter, "What a sucking louse."
I like my definition MUCH better Big Grin

Sharon73, back to the one kiss and a hug thing. I was watching a VERY Spanish TV show last night and at various points during the program, I observed that 2 men gave one cheek kiss and a hug/pat on back as you have described seeing on your trip.

I had not noticed much before but probably because I was not looking for it.

So, I would have to agree with Ena and say it is primarily a "guy thang".

Did you notice if those in your travel group who did this were men or not?

Saludos,
jer...

Hi Jer, the interaction was actually between a man and a woman. Which is why I found it interesting. The one giving the greeting was a man. I wasn't sure if this was in any way, singling the person out, or if it was just another variation on a greeting. I have looked everywhere about this, and so far haven't found much on it. Very interesting....

By the way, bet you had no idea your cooties comment would cause such a stir! Wink
