And the title as ' Opener of cans of worms' for this week goes to....... Drumroll please.......ARNIE!!!!! I'm just joking with you Arnie ...We had a bit of a heated thread not too long ago on this subject. Check it out here if you haven't yet seen it: http://www.multimadrid.com/cgi-bin/jersbbucgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=000035 I'm going to give no opinion on the subject myself, because it's just one of those sensitive subjects that, no matter what you say, you'll never be able to content everyone. But I'll tell you one thing though, I'll have to be a lot more careful how I react the next time I tell my dog to bring me a beer and he inadvertently shows up with a bottle of prune juice. Looks like the whip's about to come down...! poseso.... Tony --- English Unlimited... Un ambiente para aprender ingls... (An English Learning Environment)

I agree with tonytorero on this one, no use beating a dead horse (not a very appropriate refran for this thread huh ). I have seen looooong threads on other message boards on this and the Typically Spanish website even has an entire forum on "Bull Fights", they must realy be into scandals quote: "...next time I tell my dog to bring me a beer and he inadvertently shows up with a bottle of prune juice.
Sure sign you are getting old my man!!! Saludos, jer...

To me, bullfighting has many artistic aspects that make it hard for me to condemn it (plus, it's not in my nature to go somewhere and criticize everything). I think there are far crueler "sports", like cockfighting, which incredibly, is still legal in my state (New Mexico).

Coincidentally, of related interest, just saw a book out titled Ritual Sacrifice in the Corrida : the Saga of Cesar Rincon by Allen Josephs ( isbn 0-8130-2462) which may interest those with a taurine state of mind!

Hey, I wasn't going to post because I don't want to contribute to the open can of worms, but ok, I'll try to make this short and sweet. Since I'm an animal lover and activist (I don't eat meat and wear synthetic leather) I've been torn over how I'll handle the bull-fighting tradition in Spain. I've chosen, no matter how much it turns my stomach, to ignore it. Why? Because as a foreigner, I don't feel fully entitled to impede upon another country's cultures and traditions, even if I have disagreements with it. I mean, if asked about it I'll voice my disgust, but I won't be protesting on the streets. I'm also realistic: they are just bulls, and we're not talking about child slavery or something more horrible. Well, let me ask the Spanish posters this: How would you react if a newly arrived foreigner, not yet a citizen, began protesting bullfighting? Do you think I have a right to, or would you feel "She should just go home." Be honest! I won't be hurt, I really want to know what you Spaniards would think!

THIS IS A RESPONSE FROM ARNIE'S WIFE, DORIS. NOT ARNIE. I HAVE TO PUT IN MY TWO CENTS WORTH. TO ALL YOU BULLFIGHT LOVERS THIS RESPONSE IS IN CAPS, BECAUSE I'M YELLING AT YOU!!!! THE NEXT TIME ANY OF YOU NEED TO GO TO THE DENTIST FOR A DRILLING OR A ROOT CANAL, TO THE HOSPITAL FOR AN OPERATION, BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO DO IT WITHOUT PAIN KILLERS, NOVACANE OR ANESTHESIA. DOES IT MAKE YOU SQUIRM????? GOOOOOD. JUST BECAUSE A BULL IS "just" A BULL, OR ANY ANIMAL IS "just" AN ANIMAL, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK IT'S OK TO TORTURE THEM???!!!!! THE SAME GOES FOR DOG FIGHTS, COCK FIGHTS, ETC. ETC. ANY ""TRADITION""" AND ""CULTURE""" IS STARTED BY MAN AND HIS MACHO EGO, NOT ANIMAL. NOBODY ASKED THEM IF IT IS OK WITH THEM TO SPEAR THEM OR RIP EACH OTHER APART FOR OUR AMUSEMENT. WE SHOULD NOT GLORIFY ANIMAL TORTURE AS ENTERTAINMENT TO SATISFY THESE MACHO EGOTISTS. I HAVE TO CHUCKLE ANY TIME THERE IS AN UPROAR FROM PEOPLE WHEN ANIMALS ATTACK IN RETURN. OR I HEAR A BULLFIGHTER GET'S GORED. DORIS

Well, someone in the Arnie houshold does not have "pelos en la lengua" Jo Doris, no te cortas ni un pelo! quote: THE NEXT TIME ANY OF YOU NEED TO GO TO THE DENTIST FOR A DRILLING OR A ROOT CANAL, TO THE HOSPITAL FOR AN OPERATION, BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO DO IT WITHOUT PAIN KILLERS, NOVACANE OR ANESTHESIA
You mean we have the option to get a painkiller or anesthesia All these years dealing with that pain for nothing, learn something new every day Saludos, jer...

:lo: [/qb] Yeesh, and I thought I was angry. If this is in response to me this poster completely misunderstood the question I was trying to ask and where I stand on animal rights. Or did anyone here on this board say bullfighting is a glorious tradition? I must have missed that. Is she responding to them? All I wanted to ask the Spanish posters is how appropriate do they think it is for foreign visitors to begin protesting certain traditions in their country, that they consider offensive (like, god help me, bullfighting). But you know, if no one responds that's ok. In retrospect my question is too sensitive and might lead to a racially-charged nasty thread. I also get the feeling that members would like this topic to close because it's getting WAY off course re. what the purpose of multimadrid is. Poor Jer has enough to deal with without moderating arguments of a greater social and political scale. That's what the CNN forums are for . I'm sorry I brought this issue up here. Also, I'm delirous from a flu and anything more I write will not make sense, so this is my last post on this topic. Goodbye everyone! Peace on earth!

Hey Brenda, no biggie, I think your question to the Spaniards was a good one. For the record, Booklady simply posted that quote above but it was from DORIS, wife of Arnie above. I have edited your post to reflect that. That was her first post under Arnie's name and I too think it was a bit overboard, I think she missed the point of my board completely. Saludos, jer...
