A lot of people have experiences of Americans being mean here!.... maybe it is to do with the high cost of getting to Ireland/UK (up to 2500€!)....what do you think?

I think Americans originally started taking home extra food due to Depression-era frugality as well as a bit of meanness. (My granny kept McDonald's ketchup packets tucked away for YEARS!) Nowadays lots of hard-working types figure a doggy bag is the only way to get your money's worth. And besides, the portions are so Super-sized these days it's obscene to throw away half the food on an overloaded plate.
My (English) husband still looks askance at me when I ask to have leftovers wrapped up -- and I usually give them to the dog, even!
Bit sugar packets? No. That would be seen as rude.
