The fiesta is the Da del Pilar - Actually representative of Zaragoza, this holiday is celebrated all over Spain and celebrates the countries Patron Saint (Virgin del Pilar). Also Da de las Fuerzas Armadas (Armed Forces Day) - Military Parade, usually starts at 12 noon in the Plaza de Coln and rolls down the Paseo de la Castellana ending in the Plaza de Cibeles, get a spot along the Castellana early for it packs out bigtime!
I shot some footage of the parade last year, click HERE for one of the more patriotic video clips (High quality, just nder 1MB).
Yeah, but since it falls on a Saturday, we don't get the day off of work... Wah, Wah, Wah! Before I came to Spain, I didn't care, but now that I'm here I get mad when I don't get my 'puente(long-weekend)'

Yeah, what genious decided to make it on a Saturday
Oh yeah, anyone coming into Madrid for the parade and festivities,
LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME!
TRAFFIC IS GOING TO BE A NIGHTMARE!
USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!
I just saw a news report and they were asking a guy in his car how thetraffic was (as he was stopped dead in the thickest trtaffic I have ever seen, "Qu mala leche!" on the part of the reporter). He said he had been in the car for 2.5 hours and that it usually takes him 40 minutes And today is simply the parade preparation.
Rachel, ETA has set bombs off on El Da de las Fuerzas Armadas. Last year some people were hurt...
quote:
Diecisiete personas sufrieron heridas leves al estallar, el 12 de octubre, un coche bomba en el aparcamiento subterrneo situado en la plaza madrilea de Coln, coincidiendo con el desfile de las Fuerzas Armadas.
17 people were slightly injured when on the 12th of October, a car bomb went off in an underground parking garage in the Puerta de Coln of Madrid as the Armed Forces parade was taking place.
You will be glad to know that this year they have emptied the garage in question as an added security measure.
Hey! This fiesta is also known among "colonials" as "da de la Raza" and "da de la hispanidad" as well as the less P.C. "Columbus Day" Everyone knows that the New World was "discovered" by St. Brendan the Navigator, an Irish monk, nearly a thousand years before Columbus and then later "discovered" 500 years later by Leif Erikson, a Norwegian(sorry, lin_san!)
Pack light, sleep cheap, eat well.
