...and I had absolutely nothing to do with the oil spill. I swear.
The Valencia area was lovely, and it was nice being the only Americana within a hundred kilometers. I learned a few things while on the Costa Blanca--you learn Spanish fastest when you go out drinking with people who don't speak English, and one should NEVER order "polla" in a restaurant, thinking it's chicken. Whoops. :b: :jeje:

El camarero, who spoke not a word of Ingles, gave me a blank, surprised look, then went completely red, and burst out laughing. He kindly explained to me that "pollo" was what I wanted for dinner, and although "polla" does, indeed, mean "pullet" in Spanish, that it can also mean "penis" depending on context, and is not really used much to describe poultry unless you are actually surrounded by pullets. Jejeje! I notice that the traditional name was spelled "La Polla" Hmmm. Pre-slang, no doubt. And what is it with the whole poultry-male genital connection?! Jer, just a note on your grammar correction, omitting the "s" (te la comistes) Quite often, in the New World particularly, there is a familiar form which is a combination of the vosotros and t form, which sometimes uses the pronoun "vos" and blends the verb forms. Heard it a lot in Costa Rica, where they tell me the Spanish is quite "pure" whatever the heck that means. Just as British English and American English diverged somewhat over time, so have the RAE Spanish and "colonial". Darn, do I sound teacherly or what?

Big Grin Big Grin
With the exception of the humble people of the Caribbean, who freely admit that they mash the Spanish language, and don't give a hoot, most of the Spanish speaking countries, claim that they speak the best colonial Spanish! Que arroganca! I leaned Spanish from a Galician and an Asturian, and I recently learned that these two forms of Spanish users also mangle the castellano! No wonder I felt so much at home in Galicia last winter! Everyone spoke like me, and I even understood their slang! Vale! Wink

Sue, actually, the RAE does include spanish words that are used in central and latin america that we don't ever use or hear in Spain (although that's slowly changing). The RAE is not exclusively Spain Spanish when accepting and publishing the dictionaries. One can find some interesting and new words...

Although, I do hope that some of the anglisized words don't ever get accepted by the RAE! My boyfriend told me that there is a new product, like the nachos in the US, that has chips and dip, and it even says on the packaging to 'Dipear'!!!! Sounds like some companies are trying to be too english! Frowner When I find out what company it is, I'm going to write a very informative letter about their shoddy translations and marketing! Grrrrrr! What is the world coming to?! Eeker

I think it is the Doritos company...They decided to introduce chips and salsa to spain with "DIPPOS" which are pretty much corn chips with too much salt on them. They sell the matching the salsa too. I think their package says dipear on it.

Yeah, Doritos is indeed to blame.

They are called "Dippas" and their ad campaign features commercials with young "hip" urban Spaniards sitting around eating the Dippas chips and "dipeando" Eeker them in the "Salsa Dippas".

They are usually talking about "dipeando" and the (not so) subliminal message behind it is that "dipear" = to "dip" in more than one sense Roll Eyes Usually a group of young Spaniards and they ask one of the guys when was the last time he dipped :b:

I don't think I need to go any further but they have turned "dipear" into an every day word here Frowner

Just goes to show how money and TV can influence a society and a language.

See the Google.com results page on the word "dipear" HERE

Thee page HERE is a riot!!! :jeje:

Jer,
Sorry you feel that way. But I think that its a small sacrifice to bring back some integrity to the language since people are so keen on bastardizing it so...

Besides, it wouldn't be forever! And I'm not saying boycott Lay's other products (lays, ruffles..) just the doritos and give them a shout! Until they fix the error!
