I have 2 weeks coming up after the end of my job and I plan to spend the majority of the time in Cantabria. I�m already definite on where I want to go - Santander, Santillana del Mar, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera. I plan on a day in Santander at the beginning and one at the end, one in Santillana and Comillas and 2 and a half in San Vicente. Does anyone have reccomendations on where to stay? I�m kinda nervous about finding a place because I�m going at the end of August/beginning of September so I�m not sure how many tourists there would be. I called a place in San Vicente and the guy was like, "Um yeah we�ll probably have a room." Greaaaaaaaat. Also, I plan on walking from Comillas to San Vicente. Anyone done this before? How is the walk? I�ve never walked alone through Spain so I�m kind of nervous. But I�ve been wanting to make this trip for a LONG time and the friend I was supposed to go with had a family emergency so he can�t come. I�m counting down the days.... and I�ll be going to Madrid, Segovia and hopefully Toledo from Cantabria Smiler

Hi Melinda, I have been to the following places in Cantabria and enjoyed them all...

� Llanes ( www.llanesnet.com ). Some of THE most beautiful beaches in Spain.
Get your mouth wattering HERE Cool

� Santander ( www.santanderciudadviva.com ). Spend a few days here.

� Santillana del Mar ( www.santillana-del-mar.com ). A day trip would suffice but they have some very quaint hostels and the village is nice at night.

� Comillas ( www.turismocomillas.com ). I know it is obvious but go see "El Capricho", even if you don't eat there.

Wish I had kept track of where we stayed but it was many years ago and I was backpacking around Spain, multimadrid was not even a glimmer in my eye yet Big Grin

I know I stayed at youth hostels in Llanes and just outside of Comillas.

In Santillana we stayed at a nice hostel and same for Santander.

I still have the Let's GO Spain guide I used waaaayyy back then, with all my notes in it as well. Worth it's weight in gold!!!

I will check it when I get home and see if I can't find more info on the places we stayed.

Hola !!

Brilliant idea visiting Cantabria ! I�m pretty sure you will love it !

Besides the places you named, and Jer�s suggestions, I would add visiting Laredo and surrounding little villages. Laredo is about 43 kms away from Santander, and it�s really beautiful.

From Laredo you can make wonderful trips to the little villages along the coast.

There's also Potes, Fuente De(The cable car up to the picos is a must) and el Valle de Liebana, Barcena Mayor used to really nice but local politics, one person in particular, have turned it into a tourist rustic village.

Hello Melinda,

Cantabria is a very good choice. Last year I have been to Cantabria and Asturia and it ws a great trip.
If you like walking, you should try the "Garganta de Cares", that's a very beautiful walk in the mountains in something like a canyon.
It's a bit exhausting (6 hours ida y vuelta), but you have really fantastic views of the canyon.

I�ve actually just made the decision that I�m going to walk the whole trip. I was originally planning to stop in San Sebastian for 2-3 days before but I�m cutting it and walking across cantabria instead. Never done anything like it so I�m going to practice here by walking to Blanes and Tossa to see how my feet take it hahaha.

Thank you for the websites... I�ve got them saved and I�m going to start doing my research this week.

Kathrin where is la Garganta de Cares? Sounds interesting and I�d love to do it. I�m probably only going as far as San Vicente de la Barquera because I want to spend at least 2 days in Madrid to visit friends and go to Segovia as well as stop in Zaragoza on the way to see an expatriot friend who�s been helping me along for the past year over email and a friend I made in line for the Operacion Triunfo concert. My trip will be from the 24th-7th. Or if things keep going bad with my friend, I may leave the 23rd.
