Planning to hike in the Monfrague park just north of Trujillo (Caceres.) Has anyone been to this park. What is the closest village/town for access to hiking trails? Thanks Joe
I stayed at an inn, right near there, and we had a guide, because we were in a group, so I don't exactly know how to answer the question, but the website has EVERYTHING! I hope you have a great time! Besos, Joy

Hey Terrific! Thanks for the website. My spanish is poor but I can struggle through it. Tell me more about the hiking? Terrain? What kind of scenery? Also if you do not remember the Inn where you stayed would you remember which town/village it was in. Thanks for your reply. Joe
Hey, it was great, there was an awesome trail that we followed, all the way from the bottom to the top of a beautiful mountain and when we got to the top we could see for miles!!! it was so great!
I dont remember the town or name of the Inn, but I can ask and get back to you ok!? I'll let you know if I can find out from my fam. Talk to you soon, Joy

Hey, ok, I asked the fam and they said we stayed in the actual town of Monfrague, at the Hosteleria de Monfrague. Spanish Dad said if you want info about it, you email him at viajesaruba@arrakis.es but...you have to write it in Spanish, cause they don't speak english very well. So, I dunno if that helps you, but that's what they said. hahaha. Hope it helps! -Joy

:jeje: Hey thanks a load. With your help I have now been able to find accommodations and a site with the trails (in english) Look forward to being there in about a month.
Also it seems that the town from which to start is Torrejon el rubio (where I also found accommodations that fit me (cheap!) I can't find a town with the name of Monfrague, just the park.
Hello, maybe a bit late, but you could also check http://www.bme.es/ctrmonfrague/como.html There you will find info about Casa Rural La Caada, in Torrejn el Rubio. I stayed there and is really nice, all renewed and comfortable, good cooking also.
Just a few minutes from the park.
Regarding the park, I suggest you start at the top of the castle, so you get a wonderful general view of the park. From there you can follow a track -behind the castle- that leads you through the beautiful forest all the way down to the damm.
Dont miss the information centre in Villarrubia de los Ojos. And do all the route along the road, take your binoculars, be pacient and you will enjoy lots of birds.
Cheers!

Hey there Perita en dulce Thanks. Just when I thought I had all the resources for Monfrague you come up with more links and valuable info. I have printed out your post. Thanks!
Hi to everyone who contributed to my questions about Monfrague. I have just returned from 2 weeks driving trip through Spain. The information that I received on this board concerning Monfrague Park was perfect. I arrived with all the details I could possibly need. Accomodations in Torrejon el Rubio were good. Hiking was very good and of course the bird viewing was great. Thanks again to everyone. Joe [URL=http://MuskokaPhotography.com]
Yay for you, Joe, you are a true adventurer. Did you see any eagles?
I rode through Monfrague a few years back on a killer 10-day endurance horseback ride with a friend. The rangers tried to kick us out, saying no "vehicles" were allowed on the mountainside trail! But seeing as we were already more than halfway, they let us on through to Torrejon, where a friendly local family stabled our steeds, showed us the jamon they had hanging in the barn rafters, sent their kid to the tienda for Coca Colas, and sat us down in the never-used Ultra Special Parlor to watch Benny Hill reruns! I love Extremadura!! The trails we rode followed a Canada (that's an enyay over the n) an old cattle trail. Spain is crisscrossed with them; they are sposedly public property and anyone can hike or ride them. They're ideal for adventurers, and take you places nobody ever goes...we rode from Gredos, near Avila, across the mountain ridges and down the Jerte Valley, at the peak of cherry season, then straight south, through Monfrague, and ended in Trujillo.
I don't think they offer this particular trip, this was a "shakedown cruise," to see if it could work for regular tourists; it was extremely taxing even to seasoned riders. But If you're a hard-ass horse-rider and it sounds interesting, contact Jesus at Equitours, the parador at Gredos can put you in touch. (I hope that wasn't an ad.)
Ciao! Rebekah

I'm afraid that I have only ridden a horse once. I would love to do more but just don't have the opportunity to do so. Yes of course we saw lots of eagles soaring at Monfrague. It was neat how sometimes they would seem to fly in formation. Since you brought it up, I guess this is as good a time/place to ask....what is the meaning of the word "Canada" (with the enya)? I see this word used throughout Spain and being from CANADA (no enya) I am naturally very curious?? Thanks Joe
I think it just means "trail." At least that's what the word refers to: those old cattle trails with government protection dating back to the Catholic Monarchs.
