I have friends coming to visit here and they will have limited time, but enough to see Madrid and want to go to another city or two. What do people recommend? The guide books are all about Seville and Barcelona, but are there other places that would be more enjoyable - especially during hot July...

Hi LisaAnn,

Seville would be DAMN hot during July, although it's a delightful city. Barcelona's not too bad and is very very worth visiting - the guidebooks are on about it for a reason! However on the cooler side is San Sebastian and Bilbao, in the north. Both are gorgeous cities and the countryside is also gorgeous. Both are available by train.

The other city your friends can visit is Toledo, which can be done as a one-day excursion. It is definitely worth the trip. I would also recommend you Andalusia. This once-great stronghold of Muslim Spain is rich in history and tradition, containing some of the country's most celebrated treasures: the world-famous Mezquita (mosque) in Córdoba, the Alhambra in Granada, and the great Gothic cathedral in Seville. But yes, it is very hot in a summer. San Sebastian and Bilbao would work. Once in Bilbao, visit Guggenheim museum. Barcelona can be easily reached by fast train form Madrid. It’s truly one of the most beautiful cities of Spain. Since your friends are short of time take advise of the travel professionals, the company like Escapade vacation for instance: www.escapadevacations.com. Their advise will save you time and money in a long run. They are certainly the experts.

I second Juliette - although Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba, etc would are lovely, it's seriously hot down there. Even the flies lay down and quietly gasp for shade and water. If that's your thing, though, don't let it put you off, esp as Granada's Alhambra is a World Heritage Site.

Toledo is also lovely, and close to Madrid. It too will be hot, but that's virtually all of Espana. Salamanca or Caceres would give you a feel for an old-world Spanish village. If you go to either city, make sure to see it at night, esp Plaza Mayor in Salamanca.

I also encourage San Sebastian, one of the prettiest cities in Spain, as well as one of the nicest-feeling. The mountains and coasts are lovely too, with more Spanish tourists and less "guiris".

And Barcelona...well, it's not like if you come to Madrid then there's not much reason to see Barcelona. The cities are so different in character, landscape, people, even food and language. And there's always side trips from there, too. I always like to go out to Girona when I'm there, a pretty medieval town about 1.5 hrs by train.

I've also been recommended Cadiz in the south, and all the Spanish swear by Galicia in the northwest. Guess it depends on how much time and money you have.

If it were me, and I were visiting (knowing what I know how) I'd take a trip out to Toledo and Segovia, go on to Barcelona. If it weren't summer, I'd try to get Sevilla and/or Granada in, too, since the train ride down there on the AVE isn't very long, like two or three hours max.
