Hi everyone! I will be in Madrid with a group of 22 New York teenagers on March 19 (da de San Jos) ---it will be our last day in Spain, the end of our 10 day trip through Toledo and Andaluca--so the kids will be wanting to still do and see as much as they can. We have a scheduled visit to El Prado and a bus tour of the city already planned. I was hoping to give them some free time for last minute shopping...but now I found out that the shops will be closed. So, my question is: does anyone have any ideas what might be open on that afternoon? I do not want to take them to Xanadu...too far away and too much of a hassle to get to with the kids...( unless I can get our bus driver to bring us??) I am thinking of going to Joy Eslava in the evening for the early session...that should be a good way of ending our trip. Any other ideas for us? We are staying on the Plaza de Espaa. Thanks for any and all ideas Smiler

Way too expensive...remember we will be at the end of our trip and the kids ( 17 year olds..) will not have much money...any other thoughts?
Jer, if you see us wandering the Plaza Mayor on the 19th in the evening..."give me a shout" Smiler ...

For whats on information, the best source is the Ayuntamiento website, www.munimadrid.es go to
Bsqueda avanzada and specify your date. Usually youll see hundreds of results, so be as specific as you can (actually the search by date is a bit primitive, as some things get put in as a season:
for instance if theres a season of concerts from Feb 18 to Apr 18 inclusive, any date in between like Mar 19 will be shown as having activity even if there isnt anything that very day.)

With that caveat, the listings are very comprehensive and useful. Its not just municipal events, youll find commercial offerings there too. On seeing the suggestion about the Queen musical I wondered about something more Spanish. Stephen

hey marcela, the 19th is "San Jos" (St. Joseph) and there is a "novillada" (amateur bullfight) at las ventas that afternoon...

quote:
Viernes, 19 de marzo

Novillos de Antonio San Romn para

Jesuli de Torrecera
Luis Miguel Vzquez
Javier Sols
( taken from www.las-ventas.com/noticias/marzo2004.htm )

i looked on ticketstoros.com and you can see the fight for as little as 3 uros per person.

click the link below to go to the purchaseing page with more info...

www.ticketstoros.com/tpv/festejos.asp?idFestejo=308

the bullfight is at 5:00pm and should last a few hours, then you could take them to an earlyish typically spanish dinner, maybe at my fave "Bar Restaurante Los Angeles" on Calle del Angel down in the Latina area (YOU WILL NEED A RESERVATION ON A FRIDAY NIGHT, BUT IF YOU GO EARLY ENOUGH YOU SHOULD BE OK).

just some suggestions for an inexpensive and fun last night in madrid.

saludos,
jer...

hey miguelito, if you are referring to the bullfight, no.

i have brought teenage americans to their first bullfight and they liked it a lot. worst case you leave after the first 3 bulls or so. there i agree with ya, nobody (normal) can deal with all 6 :z:

if you are referring to the tapas and dinner, no.

saludos,
jer...

thanks for the idea of a bullfight...something I had not thought of at all...something some of the kids might really like to experience. I will keep it in mind. We will have been to Ronda and seen the Plaza de Toros there...it might inspire them to want to see a real Corrida.

Then Ok.
I think that if they are under 14 they have to go with an adult. Can someone confirm this?

Well, we are back from our visit to Spain! We returned to NY yesterday. And yes, we did get to the bullfight on the 19th at Ventas...the students loved it...really... some of them did not really like the idea of killing the bull, but they enjoyed the spectacle and atmosphere. Earlier in the week we had been to Ronda and they got to go to the Plaza de Toros there and see the museum...they were fascinated by the bullfight and wanted to experience it for themselves. I was so proud of them...they were "open" to the experience.

We had a great time in Spain! We arrived on the morning of the 12th...My students and I experienced a very historic week in Spain...I am so glad we were able to go and that the trip was not cancelled or postponed, as it had been for the last two years.

I had a ball...revisting the South after so many years of only going to Madrid and the north. And I loved seeing Spain through their "fresh" eyes. It was great. Jer, I was really busy( as you can imagine!) our one and a half days in Madrid, that is why I did not call you...but WAS thinking of you while in the Plaza Mayor...I looked up to your window and smiled.

Hi Marcela!

So glad that you had a good time in Spain afterall. Im sure that you arrived with a bit of trepidation.

I recall the first bullfight that I ever attended... it was on a high school trip to Spain as well. A very memorable experience...one that your students will cherish for years to come.

Thanks for posting and letting us know that you got back safe and sound! Smiler

hey marcela, awesome!!! so glad the bullfight worked out Cool

did the kids last the 6 bulls? or did you leave early.

would have loved to meet up and say "hola" to you all but i understand you were very busy in madrid. i haave taken groups of students around as well and know what it is like.

i think from an educational point of view what you did was PERFECT, taking them to the bullring in ronda to learn about bullfighting and then to a real bullfight in las ventas
