Hi there, I'm a student who will be studying abroad in Madrid from August through May. Two of my hobbies are running and weight-lifting. I prefer to run 20 to 30 miles per week and not on treadmills!! Is running after dark a problem? Are there many parks or places suitable for my sport? I've heard that running is quite popular in Spain. Is this true? Are there fitness centers or gyms like we have here in the US? Thanks Big Grin

Hi nellie, jer here. I assume from other posts of yours that you will be living in a dorm on the csmpus, correct? The Universidad Complutense de Madrid (www.ucm.es) and in Englih at www.ucm.es/info/vicrint/indexe.htm has a very helpful website and they even have sports clubs, may want to look into it all. Like any U.S. university or college, there are sports complexes here as well and If I were you I would ask the SLU program director about the facilities available to you as a visiting student. Before joining a private club, find out if you will be able to use the university gym, resources, etc... There are also plenty of public (city run) and privete health clubs and gyms around the city, prices vary and convenience will depend on the exact location of your dorm and school. As for running, Madrid is a rather safe city but I would not run alone after dark in the parks anywhere in the world. Use your common sense and you will be OK. Parks are abundant here and the Casa de Campo is a huge and great reource for runners.
Saludos,
jer...
