Hola amigos,

Here's the topic: hiking. City life is great and all, but I need out of here. I know the Sierra Nevadas are at our doorstep as psuedo-madrileos, so please tell me if you know where should I go and how do I get there? I need the heck out of dodge.

Cuidate,

Jill

Hi JetAway!.

Maybe I'm still asleep this morning and my brain doesn't work very well but ... I think that Sierra Nevada is quite far from Madrid. Sierra Nevada is in Granada.

Last year I was in "El Circo de Gredos". My friends took me there by car. I think that is near vila about 2,5 hours by car from Madrid but I can't remember where is located exactly. I know that there is a camping near the mountain. The climbing is not difficult. I went with my girlfiend and our doggie and it took us about 70 minutes at a quiet pace to reach to the top, and then, you must go down to the "Circus" (about 20 minutes). There you'll find a beautiful lake in the middle of the mountains. I liked it a lot.

Bye!.

Hey Jetaway, totx is not sleepy at all this morning, the Sierra Nevada is in Andaluca, pretty close to Granada but you are referring to the "Sierra de Madrid" which is also called "Sierra Norte" as well as other things.

I think you will find the website at www.sierranorte.com a huge escape for your hike hungry feet & body Big Grin

Pay close attention to their "rutas" (routes) section at www.sierranorte.com/rutas/index.html Smiler

Complete with 360 panoramics, webcams and a forum (a bit hard to get around but it is ok Wink ), the site is great.

Saludos & happy trails,
jer...

If you're going to hike in the Sierra, and you don't have anybody to go with, please let me know (unless you prefer lonely walks). I love hiking, but I never find anyone to walk with.
I you want to read more (books) about the Sierra, I recommed you go to "La tienda verde", at 23-38 Maudes St. You may find good books about the Sierra in any good library or El Corte Ingls or FNAC. If you even decide to buy some books, Domingo Pliego is one of the best authors about the Sierra.

Max,

Thanks for the information. Yes, I was confused about my Sierras. I will definitely keep you in mind as a hiking buddy. I may be going with my boyfriend, but I don't know yet. Where in Madrid is Maude St. I would love to go to the bookstore you are talking about. Do they have English publications?

I checked out the www.sierranorte.com website. There's lots of information. Can someone tell me of a preferred place. There are so many places to go. And also if you must go by car or if there is public transportation there.

I would greatly appreciate any help you, Max, can give me or anyone else.

Thanks in advance!

Jill

Hi Jill, Max, and everybody,

I too would LOOOVE to start hiking, treking or whatever allow us to enjoy nature, specially now that spring is here, YES!!!; and gets me a little into shape (God knows a need it!)

So please, count me in! Unfortunately, I must tell you that I don't drive, so maybe I can be the 'tortilla de patata''s official provider or something like that. Wink

I don't have a car either and that is the question of the day: is there a way to do this without a car?

Can you get to interesting places in the Sierra even if you don't drive a car? The answer is yes!!! Even if don't like buses, like me. You can get to El Escorial, Cercedilla, Navacerrada or Cotos by train. And if you want to get to the Sierra Norte I think there are quite a few buses. Problem is I don't know where to get some info. about them. I'll try to look for something. Anyway, I don't own a car, but I can get my sister's sometimes, so we can think of meeting any day in Easter, if you're in Madrid, and trying to go any place in the Sierra.

Ok, some info. on buses:

-from the "intercambiador" in Moncloa (it is in the tube station):
-El Escorial, San Lorenzo de El Escorial: bus numbers 661, 664,
-Cotos, #691,

-from the "intercambiador" in Plaza de Castilla:
-Manzanares El Real, #724,
-Rascafra, #194,
-Horcajuelo de la Sierra, #199,
-Torrelaguna, #197.

There are some other hiking trails, not in the Sierra, like those around Rivas and Arganda. These may be reached by tube (line 9). You may find more info. about them in the Comunidad de Madrid Tourist Offices and the Madrid metro "Oficinas de Atencin al Cliente" (you can find two of them in Atocha and Av. de Amrica).

Hope to see this "hiking group" walking soon!

Cool Jill, Wednesday works for me but it would be best if we left late morning (11:00 or 12:00 ish) since I want to see the processions at 19:30 and want to get back a few hours before that.

Max, pim, totx, etc, what do you say?

My car holds up to 5 (better if it is 4).

I e-mailed you guys, let me know if you are in.

Saludos,
jer...
