One of the things I haven't been able to do yet but really want to is see an olive tree up close and try one of the olives. I know they are supposed to be disgusting, but I still want to do it. Does anyone know of any tours where you can watch olive oil being processed?

Hey Nanny, good question.

I was fortunate enough to be able to actually harvest olives years ago in Granada as my host family (I was a group leader for American high school kids staying in Granada for 6 weeks) had some groves. They invited me back to see how the "cosecha" (harvest) was done but they were not producers of olive oil so I never got that far.

If you want to see the oil making process, you may want to shoot an e-mail off to THESE PEOPLE and see what they tell you.

They have olive oil tasting tours but do not say if they also show you the process.

I also found THIS PAGE, maybe Mr. Riis (seesm to really know his stuff) has some leads on this. See the "E-mail" text link at the bottom of HIS PAGE.

Please let us know what you find out.

Saludos,
jer...

Well, I fired off an e-mail and will see what they say. No way could I afford their regular tours, Que Caro!!!
Thanks again Jer,
I hope I get to meet you when I finally make it over. Have you already thought about a January get together?

Hi Nanny,

Allow me to butt in just now. While sr. jer is the master supreme of mm, it is a living breathing entity on its own.

My point? Anyone can plan a January meet-up. You either a) start a new thread under "Buddy Up.." or better yet, you enliven the thread entitled "multimadrid Get Togethers" which is somewhere under "Buddy Up..."

So, that said, the answer to your question about January meet-ups is...if you want one, make it so!

Cheers,
Candela

The harvest is in November-December usually ;-)

As for tasting the olives, there are plenty in Coln Sq. and Campo de las Naciones, among other places in Madrid. You'll regret it :-D

No: my parents were this last weekend in Jaen, and people were harvesting. I just mean that you have to be quick if you want to see anything this year (I think that some people even harvest in January,... but not too many).

I recommend that you "google", besides the more obvious (aceite, olivo, oliva, cosecha, etc.), these words: beda, Baeza, Cazorla, Museo de la Cultura del Olivo. I'm very sorry, but I don't have the time to do it for you now, and to filter the results :-S

Ive done an olive oil tour in almeria, they show you how they made the oil in the old days and how they do it now. it is very interesting and they dont charge admission. they will then give you a taste and you can buy bottles but there is no pressure. the people that run it are very friendly and helpful. and its the best olive oil ive ever tried.

Candeeeeeeeelllaaaa, thnaks for that advice to Nanny about get-toghers, I always try to get it into peeps heads that ANYONE can come here to the baord and organize a get-together, I prefer it that way.

Best to stick to the olive topic here but I will say, Nanny, it is still way to early (at least for me) to think about January but feel free to go to the "buddy up with other travellers" forum and post your Jan. get-together idea on the "multimadrid get-togethers" thread. Be sure you have your ticket over before proposing a get-together however.

Back to olives.

In Granada, my host family harvested in early Jan.

Don't listen to Max, the olive in its pure state is YUMMY, even better with whipped cream :jeje: Wink

This past March, Irene, my parents, and I visited El Vnculo, located in Zahara de la Sierra in the province of Cadiz. We got a very informative tour of the olive pressing facilities, and sampled the results in the tasting room. I have some pictures; if you would like to see them let me know.

I don't remember paying anything for the tour. If there was a charge, it wasn't enough that I would remember it. It had been raining for hours and we were just happy to be able to get out of the rain.

This may not really help, but I made olive oil in Israel when I was there. I know it's not Spain, but I can tell you that olive oil really easy to make. And it does taste great.

This may also be of no help, but I am really allergic to olive trees in their natural habitat. I am not allergic to olives, olive oil or any other olive product. So, just be careful if you have allergies, cause it's not very comfortable. If you do go olive tree hunting, bring some allergy meds. That way you will be able to enjoy your trip.

Tevia, were the olive trees in bloom during your visit? I know that many people are allergic to olive pollen, but I haven't heard of someone being allergic to the trees at other times of the year.

My dad cured olives when I was a kid; I wish I had a fresh olive source, because I'd sure like to try my hand at it.
