The rural world of The Archers is now at the vanguard of a technological revolution.
The radio soap about life in the village of Ambridge is the most popular programme downloaded on the internet and a driving force behind the BBC's bid to encourage listeners online.
More than 650,000 people logged on to the BBC website in March to hear episodes of the 15-minute drama, nearly 30 per cent of the total 2.2 million audience for the programme.
The number of Archers fans listening online has almost doubled since last year. It attracts almost 100,000 more than for the second most popular programme, the Chris Moyles breakfast show on Radio 1. (article continues...)
