Me again! Have been studying Spanish for just over a year and a half now. Have had some great 'chance' conversations to practice when in Madrid but would really like to be a little braver this time. Have read about meetups on this page but not too sure what they are. Any ideas on how I can spend an evening torturing Spaniards with my dire grammar? or swapping English for Spanish conversation. Have looked into schools but they mostly seem to have quite lengthy courses and I really want something much shorter as it's my holiday. Thanks for the second time tonight! Karenanne

How about telling people your interests?

Flamenco & football - what a great combination!! Smiler Especially when you're from Birmingham! Big Grin Big Grin

No seriously though, If football doesn't start the conversation rolling.....Well ok, you'll have to talk to the male half of the population but..

my fave place to speak Spanish was at my local bar. The waiters know NO english, except for a few words. They are very nice and the food is great (but no view). The place is called El Diamante at Metro La Latina. Just exit San Francisco and the bar is on the corner. Tell them the girl from Los Angeles who only ate tortilla and drank coffee sent you. They may hook you up with some free grub. You have to go after 3pm. That's when "my boys" are there. Ypu can tell them my name Tevia, but they never could remember that. No, it's not the most exciting place to be, but that's where all the locals go. Sometimes being in the tourist traps can be a drag. I believe they have the BEST tortilla in town.

Curious you should mention La Diamante, I used to go there sometimes. It is an interesting place.

Another "attraction", at least in the mens room, is one of those old-fashioned holes in the ground... (putting this on the board will keep the tourists away and preserve the authentic atmosphere). Stephen

Tevia,

You ate at El Brillante ONLY tortilla? What??? no 'bocadillos de calamares'? Eeker Frowner , and never a "clarita" or a "sidrita"! Well, at least I hope sometimes you had your tortilla "a la brava" (with "brava" sauce) Roll Eyes Smiler

Saludos guapsima!

pim, read more carefully.

It was "EL DIAMANTE", not El Brillante.
