Hi all!

I have a Japanese male student, 31, who has NOOOOOO social life. Does anyone know anything to recommend to him here in Madrid? He is learning Spanish and is mid-intermediate English. A really nice guy, good sense of humor. I have invited him to Wiffle and volley but I doubt he'll take me up on it. If anyone has any idea of any where I can direct him, especially involving Japanese folks, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Jar

Not meaning to sound rude, but why would your friend be in Madrid if he wanted to only be involved in activities with other Japanese folk? Surely the whole point is to try and meet as many Spanish as possible?

You have invited him to volleyball and that strange game wink wiffleball. If he doesn´t want to join in then...........

hey Jar, i am with madsue on this one.

your japanese amigo sounds VERY shy or perhaps he is just a loner.

i am guessing that his only reason for being in spain is to learn spanish.

in that case, coming to the vball and wiffle ball would not help him achieve his lang. goals as we speak english a lot there (either that or spanglish).

if he wants to meet people however and get a social life going, it would be ideal for him to come along.

i mentioned to you at vball that we will have a tapas night soon. not sure if you are coming since you have not signed up but if you are, you should get him to come along next thurs. night, see THAT THREAD for more. there is always a good mix of ex-pats and spaniards at those get-togethers and we ALWAYS have a BLAST!!! brews

we know you mean well and only want to help him but if he does not come along to any of the events that you propose to him, i would just drop it, it was not meant to be.

saludos,
jer...

Flamenco, in Japanese!!! Now there's an idea!!

How about this.......

http://www.esflamenco.com/jaindex.html

This is a brilliant website, that does English, as well as Spanish, and AMAZINGLY Japanese as well, because the Japanese are also "Aficionados" like me, (lovers of) Flamenco music & dance, and they have an on-line community too, who chat specifically about Flamenco related issues only, and share all their stories about having seen one show or another, or Flamenco legend/superstar, here & there.

Show it to him and see if he develops an interest in Flamenco, because if he does, he'll make a whole lot of new friends in Spain, as there are MILLIONS of us, who are deeply into the music, including many Japanese students, who are in Spain to study the language/history/culture etc.

Try that, and see how that goes.

Cheers.......Santiago

Thanks to everyone! I will mention all of the above to him.

FYI - he is in Spain mainly for work and is taking Spanish mainly to survive. Yes, he is shy and works too much, a stereotype that, unfortunately, fits him.

If he doesn't take advantage of our information, I'll drop it. Can't force leisure.

Thanks again! and I'll see y'all at wiffle.
