hey Candela.

it is not clearly defined.

it can mean all of those things but not necessarily.

for example, someone can be a pijo/a without actually having money so wealthy is not really a good translation.

for me, posh is out since it has a positive connotation while pijo is negative. that is just my take on the word posh, others will have diff. opinions. i see "posh" more as "ritzy" which would translate more to "lujoso" (luxurious).

it is more the way they act and their attitude than what they have that defines if they are pijo/a or not.

i would say that the best translation would be "snob".

saludos,
jer...

Candace.

It is more in the range or realm of 'putting on airs' and acting, being or dressing a certain way. But as jer said, not necessarily limited to arrogance.

I often tell students it more or less corresponds to "preppy" (USA) or "sloaney" (UK)

hey scooter.

maybe but the only problem i can see there is that preppy (at least in u.s.a.) usually means the person has money while one can be a "pijo" and not be rich.

I would disagree with you on preppy Jer, I would say preppy is more of a style, but doesn't mean you have to have money to attain this style. You can buy preppy clothes in Walmart for instance. For me preppy is more about a clean fashionable style. Think golf/ tennis shirts, lots of white and pastel.
